Welcome back to the JournalismAI newsletter!

It's the last edition of the year – and what a year it's been! 🎉

Since 2019, we have been working on making the potential of AI technologies more accessible for journalists and media organisations worldwide.

And 2022 has been a momentous year for our mission:

On one side, technological advancements in the field of generative AI, with tools such as DALL·E 2 and ChatGPT, made it clearer than ever that this is not the future but something that journalists and the media should reckon with today.

On the other hand, the generous funding from our partners at the Google News Initiative allowed us to grow our programmes and start new ones, so that we could scale up our offer and support you even further.

Here are some highlights from this year and the resources you can explore:

🎉  JournalismAI Festival

We hosted the third edition of our online global conference, and you can now watch the videos of all the sessions on YouTube and find the slides used by the speakers in this folder.

Note: Apologies for the low image quality of some of the videos. We encountered some technical issues in processing the recording files from Zoom. We’ll update the playlist with better versions of the videos in January.

🏆  JournalismAI Fellowship

The first year of our new Fellowship programme was a resounding success, resulting in 10 fantastic projects that showcase innovative ideas to use AI technologies to power journalism.

A huge thanks goes to our Fellows for their passion and dedication, and to our friends of the Knight Lab at Northwestern University for their generous support and expert advice.

📡  JournalismAI Discovery

We launched a new training course that will start in January 2023 and that is open to anyone who wants to learn more about the key principles of AI in journalism.

Registrations are open until January 8th, 2023: Sign up now and don’t miss the opportunity to join our global classroom!

🎓  JournalismAI Academy for Small Newsrooms

After a successful pilot in 2021, this year our Academy supported 40 new talented journalists from across Asia and the Americas.

Our brilliant instructors led the participants through an intense and rewarding 8-week experience. We can’t wait to see the amazing things that our participants will build next year with everything they’ve learned!

💬  ChatGPT Pulse Check

As we mentioned in the first part of this newsletter, 2022 was a big year for AI in journalism also because of the advancements in generative AI.

ChatGPT, the latest chatbot developed by OpenAI, gained 1 million users in less than a week, enticing a mix of reactions from the excited to the terrified.

Journalists took notice, to the point that ChatGPT features in (at least) five of the Nieman Lab Predictions for Journalism 2023:

❖   The year we embrace the robots — and ourselves

❖   Generative AI brings wrongness at scale
❖   AI throws a lifeline to local publishers
❖   The year AI truly arrives — and with it the reckoning
  ❖   The AI content flood

Have you tried ChatGPT? We’d love to know what you think of it, and what questions you may have about its potential applications in, and implications for, journalism.

Let us know what you think by replying to this email!

Everyone's favourite section: FREE resources!

Programmes like the Fellowship and the Academy are just half of what we do. We are passionate about creating resources that all journalists can use to improve their understanding of AI technologies.

After four years, we have quite a few of them so you can find the one that works best for you:

👋  See you in 2023

That was a long newsletter :) If you made it to this point: Thank you!

Everything we do is made possible by the participation, feedback, and passion of our global community. We are more than 6,000 now, from every corner of the world, and we learn from you every day.

We are taking a couple of weeks off but we’ll be back in your inbox in January to start a new exciting year of JournalismAI together.

All the best for the end of the year and the start of the new one! 🥳
