December 2022

Group Photo from our Holiday Luncheon.

A Festive Holiday Luncheon and Anniversary Celebration.

Many of us gathered together on December 6 at Rocky Fork Country Club for a wonderful Holiday Luncheon and celebration of our 90th Anniversary.  There were 16 of us present, which included our past speaker and perspective member, Karin Dahl.  We had a very nice lunch followed by a short meeting, and then spoke about the history of our Branch, along with photos from our archives that Darlene Yeager-Torre and Bev Goldie were able to share.  Some of the things we learned:
  • 90 years ago was 1932 when the president was Franklin D. Roosevelt, Emelia Earhart made her Trans-Atlantic trip, Avg. income was $1,650, Gas was .10 per gallon, bread was .07, and a movie was .25.
  • Originally, there were 3 branches in Ohio- Dublin Branch, Columbus Branch, and Central Ohio Branch.  In 2007 all 3 branches had deminishing membership so a special meeting was held with delegates of all 3 (Led by Marcia Bohley, president of the Central OH branch then!) and they voted to merge into the Greater Columbus Branch of NLAPW
  • Then in 2013 the IRS revoked the Greater Columbus Branch charter due to problems filing w/o the Branch EIN number.  The Branch decided to to disband the Greater Columbus Branch and reinstated as the Central Ohio Branch NLAPW.
  • Central Ohio Branch Member, Freda Postle Koch, received the Ohioana Book Award in 1986 for her book Colonial Coggeshall: The Man Who Saved Lincoln.
  • In 1990-92, Deb Anderson submitted the winning entry to the Biennial Art Exhibit.  (BTW- Deb may be the longest running member.  She told us she was part of NLAPW in 1972- 50 years ago!!)
  • Our branch dues were $10 in 1984 and still remain the same today, despite the increase of our national dues.
  • Among the notable members of our Ohio Branch of NLAPW was Alice Schille, a nationally known impressionist painter who had a retrospective in the Columbus Art Museum a few years ago and her work is among collections all over the world.
  • Another notable member was Florence Ralston Werum (1888-1960), who's poetry was published throughout Canada and the US.
  • Many Thanks for Joni Meeker for her research on life in 1932, and for Darlene Yeager-Torre and Bev Goldie for their research and displays for our 90th Anniversary Celebration!!
A few of the reflections from our members about what NLAPW means to them are available to view in these videos:
