Dear Friends and Supporters,

From the recent payroll issues to Superintendent Botana’s resignation, the Portland Public Schools (PPS) is facing major stressors. Like many of you, we have been frustrated and disappointed that many PPS staff members have not been fully or accurately paid over the last several pay periods.

This does not change our commitment to our mission—to be a catalyst for increased educational opportunities, achievement, and equity for all Portland Public Schools students and staff. We know that students do better when the community is engaged in our schools. The Foundation for Portland Public Schools’ (FPPS) vision is to strengthen schools through community investment. We can do this work nimbly because we are an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We partner with PPS, yes. We champion the good work in our schools, yes. But it’s important to remember that we are a separate organization governed by a board of directors.

We can’t lose sight of the fact that PPS is a sum of its many parts. PPS continues to be a district of committed educators who work hard and care deeply about educating our children. During these turbulent times, FPPS will continue prioritizing students and providing enhancements, innovation, and support. Whether it's through increasing STEM opportunities, supporting music and the arts, addressing food insecurity, or advancing curriculum development, at FPPS we work to make schools better for Portland youth.

Happy holidays,

Sarah Moran, Board President, and the FPPS board of directors
