Dear colleagues and SDSN friends in the Democratic Republic of Congo,
It’s been an eventful year with consequential and historic outcomes on climate at COP27, and just earlier this week on nature at COP15. For both, however, we need to maintain and carry over momentum to action where it matters most: in countries. We need experts, researchers and implementers like you across the SDSN to get engaged to ensure that global commitments are translated into national action; that targets get operationalized and linked with local solutions; and that policies and programmes are resourced and implemented as needed. 2023 is the year to drive implementation.
Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are meant to play a central role in driving climate action – not only at global level but even more for domestic planning and policy decisions. In line with the overall emphasis on practical implementation, we at SDSN and the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) had a closer look at the specific commitments made by countries, including yours. Under the SDSN-based FELD Action Tracker we have assessed their concrete commitments and focus on action, especially to advance the transformation of food and land use that is critical for development, climate and nature.
Our latest analysis covers a total of 24 NDCs from all the G20 and additional developing countries, including yours. Check it out for a systematic analysis of targets and other key parameters that should represent the strong basis for all in-country discussions on policy development, design and implementation in the new year. They cover environmental protection and restoration, other nature-based solutions, plans and targets to concretely reduce food loss and waste, shift consumption patterns and strengthen sustainable local food economies.
As professionals and experts on sustainable development, we know that you see the urgency of ambitious action. Your expertise, networks and local understanding will be critical to shift the focus from global negotiations to national implementation. We trust that our analysis provides you with additional entry points for your work, for dialogue within your networks and with government, your partners and communities to leverage change for the SDGs and our climate.
We look forward to your engagement with us in the new year!
