EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
You've had a chance to listen to Theresa Plata in our latest podcast. Please join us in congratulating Theresa as our December Employee of the Month! Here's what the nominator had to say about her:

I am nominating Theresa for employee of the month for many reasons - dedication, creativity, initiative and reliability, to name a few. . .Her dedication to the students and families that she serves is evident in how well she knows them, [and] how much they communicate with her. . .

I can only imagine what sense of pride and empowerment her students must feel. I know Theresa is an employee of the month and works relentlessly that she is an employee of the month every month, recognized or not, the integrity and tenacity of her work is seen in the faces of her students!”

Congratulations, Theresa!

IN SCHOOLS AND BEYOND
  • Student Support Coordinator Kassidy Williams at Anadarko Sunset Elementary School in Anadarko, Oklahoma, held a small group with students where they created a beaded corn craft. SSC Kassidy and her students discussed corn and its importance to Native Americans. Students had fun making their own corn and talking about foods made from corn.

  • Student Support Coordinator Bekah Morris at the Family Resource Center in Pittsburg, Kansas, has visited all of the pre-k classrooms to read the book “Listen Buddy” to the kids. SSC Bekah has been working on social-emotional competencies with her students. While reading the book, Bekah wore her Big Listening Ears and handed out headbands with cat ears for the kids. Bekah talked to the students about using their listening ears.

  • Communities In Schools of Mid-America Student Support Coordinator Shanna Cramer at Hannah Cole Primary School in Boonville, Missouri, learned about a student whose hands were rubbed raw from moving his wheelchair daily. Shanna purchased a pair of gloves to prevent his hands from chaffing. The student and school staff were so happy! CIS of Mid-America goes above and beyond to provide our students with these basic needs items so they can focus on their learning and retention.

  • Communities In Schools of Mid-America Student Support Coordinator Krista Primers at Banneker Elementary School in Kansas City, Missouri, hosted “Camp Read A Lot,” where students and families played literacy games, had a campfire, read books aloud, played Bingo, and won raffle prizes. Each family went home with a S’mores bag and tips on how to assist their students with reading.

  • SSCs Sabrina Maldonado from Garden City High School and Silvia Ramirez-Aguayo from Dodge City High School created an attendance challenge that encouraged students from each school to compete with one another. Garden City High School in Garden City, Kansas, had the highest attendance percentage at the end of the week and won the challenge!

  • Congratulations to Eugene Jones, Student Support Coordinator at Topeka West High School, for being selected for Leadership Greater Topeka 2023. We are excited to see what Eugene will accomplish in this role!

  • With the holidays upon us, Student Support Coordinator Maggie Hubbard at Royster Middle School in Chanute, Kansas, put together 57 goodie bags for all her caseload students to take home over the break. Inside each goodie bag were holiday-themed candy, hot chocolate, stickers, a fidget, and a specialized note for each student. Maggie said, “Handing out these goodie bags was a way to intentionally express to each student how proud I was of them of them. . ..”
