The School-Based Immunisation Program (SBIP) is part of the National Immunisation Program (NIP) offering all adolescents the opportunity to be protected against vaccine-preventable diseases. In 2023, the SBIP is delivered by the WA Country Health Services, Child and Adolescent Health Service, and the City of Joondalup.
From Term 1, Year 7 students are eligible to receive the Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (dTpa) vaccine and Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, while Year 10 students are eligible to receive the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine. COVID-19 vaccine will also be offered to students aged 12–18 through the SBIP.
Parents or guardians must provide informed consent for their child to get a vaccination at school. They are encouraged to provide electronic consent via VaccinateWA. If they are not able to access the online system, a hard copy form can be requested from the school or a copy can be accessed from the HealthyWA consumer SBIP webpage (link below). Completion of consent for the following year is important to ensure adolescents are vaccinated in a timely manner.
Students who miss vaccine doses due to absence on the day of the school nursing team visit are still eligible to receive free catch-up vaccines, up to 20 years of age. They can receive catch-up vaccines from their community immunisation clinic or participating GPs, pharmacists, or Aboriginal Medical Services.
