Dear GIM Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that William Yancy, MD, has agreed to serve as interim chief of the division of General Internal Medicine (GIM). Dr. Yancy is a professor of Medicine in the GIM division and has been a member of the department for 23 years.

After medical school at East Carolina University, Dr. Yancy completed his residency and chief residency at the University of Pittsburgh.  He came to Duke as a GIM fellow and we were delighted to recruit him to our faculty after he completed his training.

As a physician-scientist, Dr. Yancy has clinical responsibilities at the Duke Lifestyle and Weight Management Center and the Duke Keto Medicine Clinic, focusing on obesity medicine. He has established himself as a leading national and international authority on the management and impact of obesity and, in particular, the effects of low-carbohydrate nutrition on weight, metabolism and certain health problems. Yancy’s work has been recognized by numerous research grants since he started at Duke, including 2 successive VA Career Development Awards, 11 VA Merit Reviews, and several NIH awards, including an R01 and an R21 as multiple PI and other R awards as co-investigator.

I am grateful for Dr. L. Ebony Boulware’s service to the division for the past nine years and appreciate Dr. Yancy’s willingness to provide interim leadership during this period of transition.  The date of this transition will be January 1, 2023.  We will plan to conduct a national search for the next division chief in the coming months.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Cooney, MD, MACP
Chair, Department of Medicine
