Award winners of 2022
by Brande Bradford

With 2023 starting, I thought it would be a great time to talk about some of the award-winning books of 2022. If you are looking for titles to start your 2023 reading adventure, these may be a good place to start.

The National Book Award recognizes and outstanding work of fiction by an American author. The Rabbit Hutch by Tess Gunty is a debut novel that is set over one sweltering week in an Indiana summer. You’ll find an intense cast of characters living in a low-cost housing complex, including the beautiful and intelligent Blandine, and the mysterious obituary writer. The residents of the Rabbit Hutch will be thrown together - or torn apart - by an unbelievable act of violence.

Other National Book award winners in the Library collection include The Round House by Louise Erdrich, The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen, and All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy.

The National Book Critics Circle Award honors outstanding writing that fosters a national conversation about reading, criticism, and literature. The Love Songs of W. E. B. Du Bois by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, published in May, follows Ailey Pearl Garfield as she navigates W.E.B Du Bois’ problem of “Double Consciousness.” Primarily raised in the city, but spending her summer in her ancestral hometown of Chicasetta, Georgia, she feels pressured to succeed from two centuries of maternal relatives while struggling to find her own identity.

The Stories of John Cheever by John Cheever, Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, and Improvement by Joan Silber are also Critic Circle award winners that are available to check out.

The Edgar Awards are an annual award presented each year by the Mystery Writers of America. The 2022 winner is Five Decembers by James Kestrel. Set in a still-peaceful December 1941, this book takes Honolulu detective James McGrady on a trans-Pacific hunt for a killer. This is more than a thriller, with elements of romance and lessons of the brutal cost of war. If you are looking for more Edgar Award winners, try Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line by Deepa Anappara, Down the River Unto the Sea by Walter Moseley, or Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger.

I know “What do I read now?” can be a daunting question for anyone. Award winners are a great jumping off point for your reading journey.
