Shark Markets in Indonesia

At a traditional market in the Indonesian city of Pangkalpinang workers butcher various sizes of sharks, rays or guitarfish from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. Most lucrative are the sharks' fins, which are dried and exported. Resha Juhari / We Animals Media

How fascinating that Indonesia's diverse marine habitat is home to 20 percent of the world's shark and ray species. Recently, our photojournalist Resha Juhari documented the slaughter and sale of these endangered, majestic and often misunderstood creatures at the country's traditional markets.

Meet Havva Zorlu, a We Animals Media animal photojournalist born and raised in Turkey. Havva studied journalism and photography in high school and university and is a rising star in the field of animal photojournalism.

"Now, as I think back about those days (photographing Eid-al-Adha) and look at the images, I feel more intensely what I went through. But what I feel is nothing compared to what animals go through. I’m happy and proud to try to do my best for them."

Our full interview with Havva is available in both English & Turkish.
