  • Symposium 'The Context of Ukiyo-e' in Leiden.

  • Season's Greetings.

Dear Japanese Art Enthusiast,

At the close of an eventful year I would like to point you to two exhibitions and one upcoming symposium.

First, the exhibition Shin hanga - The new prints of Japan (1900-1960) at the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels with over 230 fine works from two private Dutch collections supplemented by prints from the Watanabe company and from the Museum's collection runs on until January 15th 2023.
A hardcover catalogue (224 pp) with all exhibits is available at 35 Euro, published by the Belgian art publisher Ludion. Please be mindful that the show is often sold out in the weekend, but tickets can be bought online if you would like to visit the exhibition.

All information can be found at the museum website.
New exhibition at the SieboldHuis.

From January 27th 2023, Japan Museum SieboldHuis opens its doors to the exhibition: The Riddles of Ukiyo-e: Women and Men in Japanese Prints 1765-1865, with fine prints by Harunobu, Koryusai, Utamaro, Sharaku, Kunimasa from private collections and two museums.
Again a hardcover catalogue with all prints
(123 items) with extensive explanatory texts
will be available from Ludion, at the SieboldHuis
and your bookstore starting late January 2023.

All information on the exhibition can be found
at the website of Japan Museum SieboldHuis.
Symposium 'The Context of Ukiyo-e'.

In conjunction with the exhibition in the SieboldHuis, the Society of Japanese Art, on the occasion of the 85th Anniversary stages a two-day symposium in the weekend of February 4th and 5th 2023 titled 'The Context of Ukiyo-e', with six prominent international specialists in the field of Ukiyo-e sketching the societal, cultural and economic background to Japanese print production.
The symposium is open for non-SJA members. The fee (95 Euro for non-members) includes lunch, cocktails after the two afternoon sessions, free admission to the SieholdHuis, and coffee and tea during breaks.

Please click here to see the line-up of speakers and the titles of their lectures, plus information on how to enroll.
Finally,

I wish you all
the best for
the Season's Holidays
and above all
a peaceful 2023!

Best regards,
Chris Uhlenbeck
