Wellness Committee Workshop for Alzheimer Month

Looking for help in growing your ability to be able to support those living in the community experiencing Dementia?

Please join the Wellness Committee on Sunday January 15 after church, when the Durham Region Alzheimer Society presents “Dementia Friendly Communities”.

With over 11,000 Canadians living with dementia, this group has developed tools and resources to give us the knowledge and confidence to support and include those who are affected. Topics to be covered include understanding dementia, the signs and symptoms, how to interact and communicate as well as environmental considerations including accessibility.

This brief session, runs approximately one hour, starting at noon in the Founders Room. Coffee and muffins will be provided to keep your hunger at bay. If you know others in the community who may be interested in learning about this, please invite them to attend. All are welcome.

Thank you for your continuing and generous support of Westminster and its many ministries!

A special thanks to the UCW for their November contribution of $6,000 and to the participants of the online auction, which raised $4,000 (half of which went to the Capital Fund). Both these contributions helped bring the projected deficit below $60,000.

Currently we are projecting a 2022 Local Fund operating deficit of approximately $56K (2022 revenues less 2022 expenses). This is based on receiving a projected $35,000 in Offerings to the Local Fund in the month of December. That would bring us to 97% of our goal for Local Fund Offerings! An additional $8K in Offerings to the Local Fund (over and above the projected $35,000) would result in reaching 100% of our Local Fund Offerings goal, and would therefore decrease the projected operating deficit to $48K.

As of November 30 we have reached:

  • 85% of our goal for Offerings to the Local Fund
  • 100% of our goal for financial donations to The Pantry
  • 36% of our goal for financial donations to the Capital Fund
  • 99% of our goal for Offerings to the Mission & Service Fund

Update on Financing of New Furnace

We are pleased to report that we have acquired a loan from the Toronto United Church Council (TUCC) under their Sustainable Energy Loan Fund (SELF), to finance the full cost of the new furnace.

The amount borrowed was $33,000 to be repaid over 10 years. The interested charged for the first five years is zero percent, the next five years is 1%. Monthly loan payments will come from our capital fund account. Payments of $275 monthly, will start Feb 1, 2023.

In 2018, TUCC amended its Letters Patent so that its services might be shared with four of the regional councils created in the major restructuring of the United Church (Western Ontario Waterways, Horseshoe Falls, Shining Waters, and East Central Ontario). (see TUCC website for additional info: https://www.tucc.ca/)

We are grateful to the Toronto United Church Council and the Eastern Ontario Regional Council for their support.

Why Give?

The ministry of Westminster United Church is supported by people like you. Worship, pastoral care, programs for children and youth, community events, and outreach are only made possible through all of our commitments and offerings.

Giving a portion of our time, energy, and financial resources for the life and work of the church is part of how we grow in faith, give thanks to God, serve others, and cultivate a spirit of generosity.
