Finding her Beat

Save the Date - Saturday Feb. 18

Join us for a special film screening and day of Taiko events at the Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema at SFU's Goldcorp Centre for the Arts on Saturday February 18 in collaboration with DOXA Documentary Film Festival. Stay tuned for a special announcement with all the details!

A master in Japanese drumming and a Korean adoptee from Minnesota boldly convene an all-female troupe to perform Taiko, the Japanese drumming art that has been off-limits to women for centuries. As the early menace of Covid rumbles in the background, the group faces down hurdles to prepare for a historic performance in snowy St. Paul. Buoyed by dynamic drum performances and do-or-die spirit, FINDING HER BEAT is an energizing and uplifting story of music, cultural expression and sisterhood.

Update! Winter Care Package Fundraiser

Thank-you for exceeding our goal!

We are pleased to announce that we exceeded our Winter Care Package Fundraising goal! Thanks to your generous support, we were able to raise funds to compile and distribute 250 winter care packages for the unhoused and precariously housed in the Downtown Eastside (Paueru Gai/Powell Street Neighbourhood)! Full of snacks, cold weather essentials, and hygiene products, the contents of these care packages were selected following input from DTES residents at our fall Minori Harvest event.

The Winter Care Package project is an initiative of Powell Street Festival Society’s year-round Downtown Eastside Community Care Programs – our grassroots efforts to enhance the community’s well-being in the face of ongoing food insecurity, housing crisis, and other emergencies. This is our third Care Package project since 2020. To continue supporting our initiatives and programs, please consider making a donation to Powell Street Festival Society.
