Older photo of me in 2014 back when I was a Councillor!
Dear <<First Name>>,

The New Year is always full of reflections. This year, I'm feeling especially honoured and grateful to come "full circle" in entering the New Year as the Minister of Municipal Affairs. As some of you know, I served as a 3-term Burnaby City Councillor (see photo above!) before becoming MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake.

I'm excited to bring my experience from both levels of government to this role and looking forward to working hard to improve how the provincial government, help municipal governments, help you.

Help with costs arrive for British Columbians

People will see extra money in their pockets with the arrival of the BC Affordability Credit. 85% of people in BC will benefit from this one-time enhanced payment – as much as an additional $164 per adult and $41 per child. That's up to $410 for a family of four. If you're eligible, you can expect to see the credit payment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) arrive yesterday. strongerbc.gov.bc.ca/cost-of-living
Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:

PharmaCare expands diabetes, heart failure, blood clot drugs coverage

Thousands of people in B.C. will benefit from BC PharmaCare’s expanded coverage of medications used to treat Type 2 diabetes, heart failure and blood clots.

Effective Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, drug coverage for two medications, dapagliflozin and apixaban will be expanded from limited coverage to regular benefit. At the same time, two other medications namely, empagliflozin and semaglutide will have their limited coverage criteria expanded.

More families in B.C. benefit from $10-a-day child care

Just this week, we’ve announced almost 1400 new $10-a-day childcare spaces across B.C. This will save families money as costs continue to remain high.

Spaces in the $10-a-day program reduce the average cost of child care from $1,000 a month to $200 a month, saving families an average $800 a month per child.

More spaces will be added during the coming weeks to meet the goal of 12,500 spaces by February 2023.

New protections in place for homebuyers in B.C.

Our government also announced new protections for people buying homes in B.C., creating a three-day protection period for people putting offers on homes.

This mandatory three-business-day period will give homebuyers more time to secure financing or arrange home inspections is the first key action the Province is taking following the B.C. Financial Services Authority’s (BCFSA) report on improving consumer protection in the real estate market. The extra time will help buyers fully consider whether a purchase is right for them under any market conditions, including in the face of rising interest rates and any high-pressure sales.

Increased funding for Human Rights Tribunal will make justice more accessible

By supporting faster access to justice at the tribunal, we’re helping people across the province get the justice they deserve.

Established in 2003, the BC Human Rights Tribunal (BCHRT) is an independent tribunal responsible for accepting, screening, mediating and adjudicating human rights complaints. During the past three years, the number of cases brought to the BCHRT has more than doubled in 3 years.

The Community Legal Assistance Society (CLAS) provides free legal services to disadvantaged people, including people bringing claims to the BCHRT.  In 2020-21, calls to the CLAS inquiry line doubled and, compared to the previous year, staff provided advice to nearly triple the number of clients.

The Province is boosting funding for the BCHRT and CLAS by as much as $4.5 million per year. The additional funding will support the BCHRT in addressing the increased caseload and allow CLAS to hire more lawyers, legal advocates and support staff to meet clients’ needs.

Home Owner Grant to help people with property taxes in 2023

The Home Owner Grant will continue to cover 92% of residential properties in B.C. with the threshold set at $2.125 million for 2023.

The basic grant amount for homeowners in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley and Capital Regional districts is $570 and up to $845 for homeowners 65 or older and veterans, as well as for people who have a disability or live with a relative who has a disability.
