It's Official: Introducing IN I-Corps
NSF I-Corps Hub Interior Northeast logo.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Cornell University and nine partners a $15 million, five-year grant to lead the newly-established NSF I-Corps Hub: Interior Northeast Region (IN I-Corps). The Interior Northeast region that stretches from New Hampshire to West Virginia is representative of large portions of the United States that are largely rural, economically underserved, and working to restore economic vitality. IN I-Corps aims to expand the nation’s geography of innovation by creating a cohesive innovation ecosystem that delivers inclusive models of education and workforce training designed for and by innovators in rural regions and small cities.

Launching on January 1, Cornell will oversee and support the administration of I-Corps regional courses and entrepreneurial curriculum in collaboration with nine partner institutions: Dartmouth College, Rochester Institute of Technology, Binghamton University, University at Buffalo, Syracuse University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Rochester, University of Vermont and West Virginia University. These ten institutions bring a strong track record of supporting deep technology innovation and have, among them, operated the UNY I-Corps Node and seven I-Corps Sites. "My motivation comes from my own experiences — lows as well as highs — from my entrepreneurial journeys. I-Corps provides a great framework for aspiring entrepreneurs to learn about the breadth of connections needed for commercializing technologies, which took me many years to understand. Seeing a student’s energy shift when the moment of discovery hits them is my reward in being an I-Corps instructor."

"I’ve learned over the years that a product’s success or failure is often determined by elements that are typically overlooked. How will the product affect existing workflows? Who will pay for it, and how do they buy? Are there existing misconceptions about the technology? The best way to find the answer to these questions is by talking directly with customers. I love that I-Corps teaches this method, because it’s not enough just to have a great product - you need to understand your customer."
