On behalf of the DeKalb House Delegation, Chair Karla Drenner invites you to participate in one of two upcoming Pre-Legislative Session Town Halls, which are held for the purpose of legislators hearing from DeKalb citizens.  Out of our 17 member delegation, five are new to the General Assembly, and one is new to our DeKalb Delegation, so there will be some new faces for you to meet!  We want to listen to YOU, to hear YOUR priorities and questions for the upcoming legislative session!

COVID, Flu, and RSV Out There!

I hope you are staying safe and healthy.  I have just recovered from my second bout of COVID - thankfully my symptoms were mild, as I am fully boosted ( I got my third booster - fourth shot - at end of September.)  COVID, the flu and RSV are all out there  - according to DeKalb Public Health, COVID cases increased by 60% in the past two weeks - if you have a chronic health condition, you may want to consider wearing a mask inside again.  And if you haven’t gotten a COVID booster or a flu shot,I encourage you to do so.  THANK YOU to all our public health workers, Doctors, Nurses,  and first responders for their efforts to care for us and keep us safe and healthy!

Stand Against Violence

Speaking of safety, and on the Ten year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Massacre, I want to acknowledge the grief, pain and loss from the deaths of many crime victims in DeKalb and Atlanta.  Tonight I am standing in solidarity with Atlanta Public School students against gun violence. I pledge to support the Atlanta Mayor, Atlanta City Council members, CEO Thurmond,  and DeKalb County Commissioners in their local efforts to address violence, and to work with my fellow state legislators to fight for safe gun ownership laws and investment in violence prevention programs. We have to do everything we can to change our culture of violence.  I  want to learn more about and amplify churches, schools and non-profits on violence prevention initiatives.  I am especially interested in the work of Emory's  Injury Prevention Research Center and the program they are piloting at Emory Hillandale.  Please contact me if you have information or ideas to share.

In The Community

I love serving on the DeKalb Juvenile Justice Council - we are pictured at the South DeKalb YMCA on Nov 21 before serving an early Thanksgiving meal to families.
Serving a delicious Thanksgiving meal to some happy families that benefit from DeKalb Juvenile Court programs and services!
With fellow Atlanta Delegation members and  City Council President and members to discuss Atlanta's Legislative Priorities on Nov 17
With fellow Decatur legislators and Decatur Mayor and council members on Nov 16 to discuss Decatur legislative priorities - in the newest event space at Legacy Park - the dairy barn!
With friends Dorothy Roberts and the wonderful gentleman who remembered me  - and I remembered him! - from neighborhood talks in 2018, at Mount Welcome Baptist Church on Nov 6th.
With Commissioner Jeff Rader at his lovely retirement celebration - THANK YOU for your 16 years of excellent public service, Jeff!
With Rep Angela Moore at the South River, at the River Rising Fundraiser for the South River Alliance - I plan to go kayaking there in 2023 - let me know if you want to join me!
The Emory Village Alliance Halloween Parade is one of my favorite community events!
At Emory Village Open Streets this year, they brought back the Artist Market, and I loved meeting Alexandra Huynh, a Padeia student and the author and illustrator of From Tears to the Sea, a beautiful storybook made of collages about water conservation.
Emory Village Alliance celebrated the Ten Year Anniversary of the dedication of the Plaza.  Thank you to Commissioner Kathie Gannon who started the alliance about 20 years ago, and who retired as our Super District Commissioner during the height of COVID.  Thank you Kathie for your 16 years of excellent public service!  And welcome to Michelle Long Spears, our newly elected commissioner, and of course thank you to Todd Hill, our indomitable board chair.
So much fun to introduce my friend Stacey Thibideaux to the deliciousness and welcoming atmosphere of My Coffee Shop in East Lake!
What a blessing to worship at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Pastor Ponder!  He preached using the text "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me", which was one of my mother's and my favorite verses.
Thank you to  Willie and Mary Render and their friend Charles for welcoming me at Poplar Springs Baptist Church!
So grateful for time together with our family at Thanksgiving.  Carly drove from Austin with her two dogs - a good effort! - and Ben drove from his new place in Charlotte - and we are glad Matthew is still here in Atlanta!

I hope you have a wonderful December with your family and friends.  And for those who are struggling this holiday season, I pray for peace and resilience for you.  There is a gentleman named John Darsey that sends me Musings almost every day.  Here is one to share with you. I like reading it aloud.

“December days . . . as Christmas time draws near; brings family warmth, and friendship’s joyful cheer, from memory’s store so many days to bless and cherish so in quiet thankfulness.”

 -- John McLeod

So Seasons Blessings to you - Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukkah, Happy New Year.  It is my honor and privilege to serve as our State Representative.  Please let me know if I can be of assistance.
