Course Highlights From Academy Faculty

NFHTA’s courses are developed and taught by fair housing experts who bring their rich knowledge and experiences to the NFHTA curriculum. Beyond their leadership within the Academy, NFHTA faculty are all leaders within their FHIP and/or FHAP organizations and are striving to make a difference in the entire fair housing community.

"Take the work seriously, don't cut corners, be empathetic, and keep an open eye and mind in doing the work so you don't miss things. Things won't get better if we just let them be. We have to be the ones who work to bring about the inclusive and fair world that we desire."

Joshua V. Barr, Esq., Chief Strategist/Founder, Raising the Barr, LLC

"Focus on the positive impact your work has on the community. Every small victory leads to a great outcome for someone, including yourself."

Maria Gonzalez, MSCJ, Assistant Deputy Director, California's Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH)

"Think creatively and keep in mind that the Fair Housing Act does more than prohibit individual acts of discrimination. The Fair Housing Act calls for broad actions designed to create and support open and integrated communities, so fair housing practitioners should pursue cases and efforts that support the Fair Housing Act's very broad goals."

Cashauna Hill, Executive Director, Louisiana Fair Housing Action Center

"Students of the Academy have been taught the fundamentals of intake and investigation: properly establishing jurisdiction, creating and executing your investigative plan, and use of prima case elements as a roadmap for conducting sound investigations. NFHTA’s great work has improved the performance of FHIPs and FHAPs and their abilities to address housing discrimination at this critical time."

Jeffrey P. May, MURP, Principal, International Development and Planning LLC

Collaborating Across Regions and States to Maximize Impact

NFHTA’s instructor-led courses include daily pre-and post-course sessions for attendees to network and ask fair housing questions. Often the questions asked by attendees relate to current investigations.

Recently, several people have inquired about cases they are examining where properties are owned and/or managed by companies across multiple states or HUD regions. More specifically, attendees have asked if it would be appropriate to reach out to fair housing groups in those other areas.

The resounding answer is “YES!” as this may lead to necessary changes at all the properties that are under a company’s umbrella.
