Introduction from Dr Mike Briers, Interim CEO at Fairtrade ANZ

I’ve had the privilege of leading this organisation for a number of months as we take steps to recruit a new CEO. Every one of the days I worked with Fairtrade, both as a Director and CEO, I’ve learnt something new and been pleasantly surprised by the expertise and passion of the Fairtrade ANZ team.

Most recently I witnessed this in Papua New Guinea when I was honoured to be part of the graduation ceremony of the first cohort from the Gender School of Leadership there. Everyone involved in that program from local Fairtrade staff and facilitators to the amazing graduates themselves, filled me with pride and confidence.

While I was in PNG, the Fairtrade ANZ team held a webinar for our partners to reflect on the year and share plans for the coming year. If you weren’t able to make it, find it here.

Indeed, we thank everyone who has worked in partnership with us this year – our donors, our licensees, our contractors and the people who buy our Fairtrade certified products. Each is as valuable as the other.

Best wishes
Mike

MICE 2022

At the end of September we participated in the Melbourne International Coffee Expo which was held for the first time in a number of years. We were delighted to have five licensees joins us at our Fairtrade stand in Origin Alley. We were also joined by two wonderful Fairtrade farmers: Madalena da Costa Soares from Timor-Leste and Mitchell Ricky from PNG. To hear their stories was a highlight for everyone. Get a glimpse from this clip of Mitchell from ABC TV News Breakfast.

Our beautiful coffee table book – about coffee

We developed a book of gorgeous photos and information from Timor-Leste and PNG for MICE (with a teeny tiny print run) but it was so popular and well received that we decided to print more and use them for wider communications purposes. We’ve also made it into a digital book.

Big beginnings in Timor-Leste
The farmers from Cooperativa Haburas Kafe Organiku sold their first Fairtrade coffee this year so their General Assembly was an exciting event for them because they got to decide how to spend their first Fairtrade Premium funds. They sold over 13 containers of coffee to the US market and received over $110,000 USD in Fairtrade Premium! One of their priority projects established was to continue working together with us and the Coffee Quality Institute to improve their coffee and sell even more in the future.

Graduations in Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste
One of Fairtrade ANZ’s big successes for 2022 has been the launch of the Women’s School of Leadership in both Timor-Leste and PNG with over 40 graduates already, some of whom have been delivering Fairtrade training to their cooperatives in the last month. We are so proud of what they’ve all achieved.

7 Eleven Australia and Fairtrade join forces

We were excited to announce our partnership with 7-Eleven in early October. Now, the 80 million cups of coffee that 7-Eleven sell each year will be Fairtrade coffee from farmers in Brazil and India. Read more here.

Black Bag Roasters - win, again
ALDI Stores Australia (with beans roasted by Black Bag Roasters) were awarded the Australian Large Retail Coffee Champion at the Golden Bean Roasting Competition for the fourth year in a row recently. They also won the CanstarBlue Award for Best Coffee earlier this year.

Changes at Jasper Coffee

In 1989 Merilyn Parker and Wells Trenfield launched their specialty coffee label Jasper Coffee in Melbourne. Sustainable before it was trendy, founding members of the Fairtrade Assoc ANZ , and stalwarts of the coffee industry in Australia, Merilyn and Wells have recently decided it’s time to step back from day to day operations. We are delighted that they have appointed Stephen Nankervis, former Commercial Partnerships Manager at Fairtrade ANZ as CEO of the company and we look forward to working with him (again)!

Karma kicking goals
Karma Cola has continued to show why we’re such big fans by being recognised for their sustainability and social impact. First, they were the highest scoring B-Corp certified company in NZ and then were awarded the Social Impactor and Grand Supreme award at the NZ Sustainable Business Network just a few weeks back.
