In this image, taken in 2019, women reflect at an exhibit hosted by long-term member the Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization (AHRDO). Originally funded by the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (ICSC), the exhibition commemorated those killed during the country's conflicts. After the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, AHRDO's staff and family members were safely relocated to Canada, following an advocacy campaign led by ICSC in which over 100 Sites of Conscience lent their support to their colleagues in need.
Sites of Conscience:
Mobilizing Memory for Truth and Justice

"The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience provided crucial support to AHRDO’s relocation to Canada by initiating an advocacy campaign...enabling us to resume our operation as a human rights and victims’ museum organization after the fall of Afghanistan."
-  HADI MARIFAT, Co-Founder and Director of the Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization

Dear Friends,

From Ukraine to Iran to Brazil, it is clear that there is no shortage of courage or conviction in the world today. New voices - including young and old, victim and survivor, activists and artists - are rising in a collective demand that their stories be heard and their truths remembered as the foundation for equality, justice, and peace.

In order to sustain this positive momentum, and stave off grave and global threats to democracy and human rights, communities need dedicated spaces to amplify these voices and harness them to fight for justice.

Sites of Conscience are those spaces.

As we close 2022, we are excited to share our latest Impact Report and honored to highlight below just a few of the ways Sites of Conscience are forging more equitable and peaceful societies by facing the past with honesty and integrity.

It is only through your most generous support that we at the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience can continue to build this bold new movement for memory. Please join us today in mobilizing memory in the service of truth and justice.

In solidarity,

The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience

Correcting the Record: Reflecting on and Revitalizing Museum Collections

Recognizing that no cultural organization is immune from discriminatory practices, the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience launched a groundbreaking project in 2022 entitled Correcting the Record: Building Inclusive, Equitable, and Engaged Societies One Narrative at a Time to provide Sites of Conscience and like-minded organizations with an accessible and replicable framework to address gaps in their collections.

"Correcting the Record is more than a typical methodology," explains Global Networks Program Director Silvia Fernández, in this interview. "It’s the foundation for a movement to dismantle dominant, hegemonic narratives that silence voices and perpetuate discrimination and exclusion in our societies."

Memory House Is Really a Home: Truth and Justice in The Gambia

In honor of her father Saul Ndow, who was forcibly disappeared in The Gambia in 2013, Nana-Jo Ndow founded the African Network Against Extrajudicial Killings and Enforced Disappearances (ANEKED), a youth-led civil society organization in 2018. Since then, the Site of Conscience has regularly partnered with our Global Initiative for Justice, Truth, and Reconciliation (GIJTR) to ensure that victims and survivors of the country's dictatorship play a central role in its transitional justice process.

"What’s great about working with the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience is that it is a true partnership," says Ms. Ndow. "There is mutual respect. You do not simply implement projects. You listen to us on the ground, and you trust us."

History in Conversation:
Youth and Atrocity Prevention

In an effort to rectify the challenges youth face in leading atrocity prevention efforts in their communities, our GIJTR led a roundtable in Bali in November 2022 to mark the culmination of a yearlong project designed to equip young people from countries emerging from conflict with the skills to identify grassroots and early response strategies for non-recurrence.

“I’m very grateful for being here and working on this project," said one participant from Côte d’Ivoire. "People like me, my friends, don’t get opportunities like this and I feel very grateful to have been able to implement my project in my community and do this work."
