POV RESORT NEWSLETTER, NOV/DEC 2022 EDITION

Dear <<First Name>>,
Haaaaaappy Holidays friends!!! The resort is festive, and we are feeling much holiday spirit. What a tremendous year, indeed. We are truly blessed to get to live "auld lang syne" at POV - we sincerely cherish the old, [growing] longer friendships we are making with so many of you. And it is a genuine treat to get to meet more and more of you as the months pass by. Finally, we want to give a special thanks to the POV Team - you have become family, and we are sincerely in awe of all you have done and are doing. You all are the heart of POV.
The start of the season brought fantastic ice conditions with weeks of low temps and very little snow. We did not get as much snow as expected this week - but it brought some excellent opportunities for winter wonderland pictures (see below for a few of them).
We have never been prouder of the resort and also to be a part of such a great team. Staff continues to improve things around here. The wood ice shanty Tom Hickson's sons built has been gussied up and put into circulation of our ice fishing rental fleet. It sits up to four with a raised floor off the slippery ice. We've also made our rental toboggan sleds and snowshoes self-serve in the rec room. For more information on our winter gear rentals, visit here. We also de-coupled some of the stand-alone bunk beds - so the cabins with the built in bunk beds have now two twin beds instead of a second set of bunk beds.
For those of you still thinking of a winter getaway to POV, availability is really filling up the remainder of the season - don't delay, book today!
And as always, until the next time we get to see you, be well...Happy Holidays to you and your families...Merry Christmas...and Happy New Years! And as a spin on the song, we will drink a cup of kindness (with butterscotch schnapps of course!) to you all this season!!!!

RAVENOUS RESTAURANT REVIEWS
EAT AND DRINK YOUR WAY THROUGH THE NORTHWOODS...
We are continuing a new tradition at POV - highlighting a local restaurant so that when you visit us you know where to find the best grub and beverages!
|
|
NEXT UP | Lanny's Fireside
Chef Lanny and his staff helm a Northwoods institution - one that has come to be truly one of our favorite restaurants in the area. This supper club is in an old house, so each room is a dining room space with a few tables - quaint and cozy doesn't begin to do it justice. If you visit Lanny's during the summer, line up your visit to see the Chain Skimmer's Water Ski show right across the street (yes, this is the same team that won state last year!). Or, visit their wonderful outdoor patio with a koi pond. And last but certainly not least we need to give a huge compliment to their staff. Rarely do you see such kindness and attentiveness - they really make your night special.
When you go in the front door you are greeted normally by the mainstay bartender Max - this guy is a quintessential bartender, always making your before dinner cocktail (including professional martinis) or after dinner drink memorable. What you won't soon forget tho is the ambience in this bar room...it is no larger than a good sized bedroom and has a semi-circle old-school bar. You know the type - the one with the curved leather armrest to lean on while having a rousing discussion on who's gonna win the football game.
The Menu | Chef Lanny invites you to join “A Northwoods Dining Experience”. This fine dining menu is definitely top three if not the best in the area. They always provide excellent salads, crostini, and crafted butters. The attention to detail put into every course at Lanny's is awesome. Each appetizer, soup, salad, and entree is pretty much perfection. We've had (AND LOVED!) their walleye almandine, fall off the bone ribs, chicken parm, lamb shank with a blue cheese red wine sauce, pork chops in the Demi Glacé sauce...you really can't go wrong with anything on this menu. And their desserts are to die for!
For more info on their hours, check out their specials and special events and opening info on their Facebook page.
To Book | Make reservations by calling (715) 547-8120. They're open Thursday to Monday (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

GET YOUR SNOWMOBILE READY
Don't wait until you have a problem! Now is the perfect time to get your snowmobile ready for this season. Ski Doo has a great primer on how to make sure your sled is in top shape for your winter adventures - here is a summary below. Lookin' forward to seeing you out on the trails! Brrrap!
Start at the Handlebars | Check the throttle and brake lever to make sure both operate correctly. Your throttle lever should move smoothly and quickly return to its original position when released. Squeeze the brake lever to ensure it doesn’t feel spongy or go all the way to the handlebar. Doublecheck that your engine stop switch is also operating correctly. Make sure there is full movement in the handlebars when turned left and right. There should also be no play in the throttle block, brake lever assembly or handlebar grips.
- Charge the Battery (if equipped) | If equipped, fully charge the battery, and check that it continues to hold a charge. If your battery quickly loses its charge, it’s time to replace.
- Drive Belt Integrity and Tension | Remove the drive belt and check the full diameter, inside and out, for damage. Look for signs of separation, edge cord, glazing or excessive wear (narrowing). These are good indications it’s time to replace. Upon reinstalling the drive belt, ensure it’s set to the proper tension (deflection) and sits at the proper height in the secondary clutch.
- Injection Oil (2-stroke) | Some trail sleds use a 2-stroke engine and require injection oil. Check injection oil reservoir level and fill if needed. It’s always recommended to use 2-stroke oil for maximum performance and longevity of your engine.
- Oil Change (4-stroke) | Other trail models use a 4-stroke engine. These engines require an annual oil change. If you did not perform this service before storing your sled, it should be done in the fall before that first ride.
- Refresh Chaincase Oil | If your sled’s chaincase oil was not changed before storing in the spring, it’s time to get it done now. Chaincase oil is sold in the exact amount you need to refill the chaincase. This is also the perfect time to doublecheck your chain for proper tension.
- Inspect Rear Suspension Components | There are several areas to look over in the rear suspension when you’re getting your snowmobile ready for winter including rear idler wheels, slider shoes, ice scratchers, and chassis/rear skid lubrication.
- Track Tension and Condition | Look for rips, tears, holes, or missing lugs in your track. You’ll also want to check track tension (deflection) and alignment.
- Skis and Carbides | Check the bottom of the skis for damage and excessive wear. The bottom surface should be smooth. Inspect the runner and carbide, too. If they’re bent, missing pieces of carbide insert or overly worn, it’s time for replacement. Ski alignment should be slightly wider at the front, or toe, of the ski than at the back. Your Operator’s Manual will outline the procedure for setting the proper 1/8-1/4” toe-out ski stance.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
We are continuing another new tradition at POV - highlighting an activity/ adventure in the area so that when you visit us you know what you want to do! We LOVE it here - we want to introduce the area to you so that you know how special it is here too!
SLEIGH RIDES IN A WINTER WONDERLAND
You haven't done the holidays proper right until you've done a winter sleigh ride through the Northwoods. I'm looking right at YOU. Holy sweet candy cane you haven't lived until you've done this - we finally were dragged screaming and whining last year from our puzzles and fireplace and now we can't get enough of it!!! It truly is one of our new favorite things to do up here.
Rocking W Sleigh Rides provides horse-drawn sleigh rides that really can't be beat. Draft horse teams take groups through the scenic wooded trails located just north of Eagle River. The 3-mile trail (which takes about an hour) provides visitors with a chance to enjoy the scenic North Woods during the winter months. You are very likely to see a multitude of deer as you go through the forest. Halfway through the ride, guests stop, gather around a bonfire and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate (schnapps optional!). They have a variety of sleighs for large or small groups.
The sleigh ride season starts Saturday, December 10, 2022 and runs through Sunday, January 1, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Reservations are required, you can make reservations by calling 715.617.6779.

One of the best ways to show those you love is to make homemade cookies. This recipe has been in Genevieve's family for generations - passed down with much care. I want to share it with you all - our extended family...as making cut-out sugar cookies is something you can do year-round.
