Winter Break 2022–23: Special Update

Construction Update is FIT's periodic report on the many campus improvements that are pending, underway, or recently completed.
In order to minimize interruptions to daily college activities, FIT tries to schedule construction and other facilities improvements during times when there are fewer people on campus. During the time between the end of the fall semester and the beginning of the spring semester, the following projects will be underway.

New Academic Building Progress
Work continues on the New Academic Building—which is located on West 28th Street and will connect with the Feldman Center—including electrical work in the cellar; plumbing and sprinkler work on the upper floors; ductwork and mechanical pipework installation on the upper floors; spray fireproofing on the 10th floor; installation of curtainwall brackets and window panels on the fourth and fifth floors; interior partition wall layout and stud wall framing installation; and concrete pour for roof-topping slab. The Admissions Office, which needs to be relocated from the Feldman Center due to New Academic Building construction, is moving to Coed Hall. Procurement, demolition, and architectural roughing will be underway this winter.

In addition, other related projects in the Feldman Center include:
  • new restrooms on the first floor of Feldman, which involves work on the ground floor as well as of the infrastructure underneath;
  • installation of new windows on the north side of the eighth floor of Feldman facing the new building;
  • connection of new sprinklers to the main sprinkler closets on the southeast side of Feldman on floors 3 through 8;
  • installation of sprinklers along the north wall of the computer classroom in Room C232;
  • welding and testing of pipe joints in the knitting lab in Room CC21; and
  • installation of fire alarm conduits in the Feldman cellar.
Other Projects on Campus
Offices in the Counseling Center, located on the second floor of the Dubinsky Student Center, will be recarpeted and painted.

Beginning December 23, the Starbucks in Dubinsky Dining Hall will be closed while additional work to replace a wall and complete lighting installation in the recently renovated space is completed. As an alternative, until the spring semester begins, FIT Express in the Feldman lobby will be available Mondays through Fridays from 9 am until 3 pm.

HVAC improvement work is planned in Room A742A, enabling the conversion of that space into a meeting room for students. HVAC work will also be done in the corridor of the fourth floor of the Pomerantz Center to enhance the energy efficiency of the system on the fourth floor bridge that connects it to the Goodman Center.

New sidewalk security lighting will be installed in front of the residence halls and along each academic building on West 27th Street.

Turnstiles
Many have asked why the newly installed turnstiles in the Feldman and Goodman centers and Nagler Hall are not yet in operation. They are awaiting mandatory FDNY inspections, which are currently backlogged. Once they pass inspection, the turnstiles will be put into service and ID cards will be used for touch access.
A Note on Construction Safety
The college has put together a document that describes construction safety on all campus projects, which answers questions about appropriate protective measures taken for any work underway in our academic or residential buildings. View the document online.
