2022: THE YEAR THAT WAS

This will be our last Council Happenings publication for the year of 2022. Where has the year gone?

As we look back on the year that was, it’s amazing how far we have come and what we have achieved in 12 months.

It’s been a record year of grant funding received across a number of high-priority infrastructure projects, we have certainly been busy building a better future for our shire. Our $19 million Fixing Country Bridges program of works is more than halfway complete, we were lucky enough to secure additional funding to cover the shortfall of rising material costs and weather delays, so we are grateful for the NSW Government for coming to party on that this week.

Projects like these make a difference to the day-to-day lives of locals. Better local roads in our regions mean safer trips to school or the shops, and more efficient journeys for freight operators and primary producers.

We also broke ground on capital works projects to enhance community facilities including the heavily consulted $1.08 million Dungog Library extension project, which is scheduled for practical completion in March 2023. The Gresford Sporting Complex amenities project, worth almost $927,000, was also realised.

This year has also focused on setting an exciting vision for what our shire is going to look like over the next ten years, with considerable work and consultation undertaken from a cultural, economic and social perspective. We continue to champion Dungog shire to all levels of government and through the development of a new Advocacy Strategy, which focuses on government partnerships that will enable economic growth in the region. Meaningful partnerships will support improved public and private infrastructure.

And who could forget the two significant flooding events that impacted the progress of our roads and bridges upgrades. We were sorry to hear of its effect on some local agricultural lands. However, we are proud of how we worked together as a community to support each other in these challenging times.

From all of us here at Council we wish you all a merry and safe Christmas and hope you all enjoy the holiday season and a well-earned break.

HAVE YOU SEEN OUR NEW WEBSITE?

Yesterday we launched our brand spanking new website.

It’s been a labour of love for more than 18 months and the result is a slick, user-friendly, functional, more secure website. We’ll keep up with our peers with technical functionality, be able to serve the needs of our community better and let’s face it, look better!

In changing to this new platform, Council also gains a number of new features and enhanced security. The new website will provide the ability to use technology allowing for automation of updating content (video feeds like Facebook videos of council meetings, embedding our ever-popular Mayor’s Message weekly videos, more interactive and modern way to display and engage around recruitment.

As with any new technology it might not be smooth sailing straight away, but please be patient with us while we iron out any launch bugs.

JAMES THEATRE OPEN DAY

The James Theatre will hold an Open Day tomorrow (17 December) in a bid to introduce a new cohort of people to the delightful ambience of the historic theatre.

The theatre is owned by Council and managed by a committee of dedicated volunteers, assisted by Friends of the James Theatre Incorporated. From 4pm -5pm there will be tours of the theatre with people given a behind the scenes view of places like the projection room where all the magic happens.

This will be followed by a social BBQ and showing of the Hollywood blockbuster Ticket to Paradise at 7pm.

The Open Day is a chance to introduce the theatre to interested parties in the hopes of finding some new recruits for the volunteer committee. Following a sizable community grant funding boon earlier this year, operations have been bolstered and it opens up opportunities to value added to the volunteer experience.

All volunteers will be provided with training and there are some exciting cultural opportunities and discussions around the theatre’s future.

FEELING FESTIVE?

While Santa is an in-demand fellow at this time of year, he’s still making time to do the rounds of our shire. We’ve had such fun following the trail of red across the shire’s carols events thus far this festive season and with one last stop before go time, the big man will put on one last hurrah for us.

Paterson Rotary Club’s Carols in the Park will be held at Tucker Park on Sunday (18 December) from 6pm. The GAPS of Gresford will provide entertainment for the evening and a few crackers to boot!
