Dear Friends,
In June 2022, CPR Initiative filed a “Citizens’ Petition to Phase Out Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Pollution” with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), but in September the Agency denied our Petition, stating they were already doing enough on climate.
Now we have taken them to Court; we are suing EPA for failing to respond adequately to the rock-solid science they are required to address:
CO2 and methane pollution clearly create an unreasonable risk of injury to public health and the environment.
I write as a doctor and mental health professional, worried about our children – as I know you are too. Studies show that a rising number of young people are struggling with the emotional toll of the unspooling climate crisis. I have sat with them, listening to their anguish, anger, and fear, seeing their tears, at times sitting in painful silence as they contemplate the future. I haven’t had a lot to offer them.
But it doesn’t have to be that way!
Along with internationally known climate scientist Dr. James E. Hansen and other experts, I have joined CPR Initiative’s lawsuit. It demands that EPA respond in a way that reflects the reality and meets the urgency. Laws already on the books empower the EPA to take truly effective action. Indeed, the EPA has already successfully imposed requirements to protect us from toxic lead paint, asbestos, and even the greenhouse gas chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
We can, and must, phase out these climate-destroying pollutants!
I am following-up on fellow petitioner (and co-plaintiff) Donn Viviani’s appeal, which landed in your inbox a couple of weeks ago. Many of us really want to do something, but don't know how to be most effective. This lawsuit is the high-level intervention we have been waiting for, and our young people need. Please give generously, because prosecuting this case now will generate the pressure we need to protect and restore our climate.
