Club Update
Merry Christmas from Bushwalking Victoria!
Welcome to the final club update for the year. Our Board, Conveners and Volunteers at Bushwalking Victoria wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and thank you for your continuing support and contribution to the bushwalking club network.

It has been a busy year for us and we will be taking a well-deserved break from 19th December to 9th January, including our Admin Officer, Alan Abrahams. However, we will be keeping an eye on emails and anything urgent will be attended to.

Club Leaders Forum - 4 February 2023

It is important that we catch up with our clubs more than once a year and a leaders forum has been scheduled for Presidents and/or Committee members to attend. The program is yet to be finalised but we will provide an update on:
  • the online leadership training program, seeking feedback on the content developed to date
  • BWV strategy - how do we build clubs for the future, are we heading in the right direction
  • club development - how can BWV assist, sharing of ideas
  • club promotion - what is needed, what works
There will also be plenty of time for open discussion and sharing of ideas and information.

Venue: Mt Waverley Youth Centre   (next door to the AGM location)
Date/Time: Saturday 4th February - 10:00 to 3:00pm

We are investigating options to livestream the day for regional participants. If this is not possible, a second forum will be scheduled on Zoom for those unable to attend face-to-face. More information will be sent out in the new year.

FedWalks 21-22 October 2023

The Wangaratta event this year was a great success with around 200 participants spending an enjoyable and social weekend in north-east Victoria.

Planning has commenced for the 2023 event and while we have received offers of assistance from interested walk leaders, we are yet to appoint our host club/s.  We have nominated the Wombat State Forest on the weekend 21-22 October as the location for the 2023 event and have a rough idea of suitable walks. However, we desperately need advice from clubs familiar with the area on a suitable location to use as the event hub for registrations and mustering of participants for walks.

We know that our club members enjoy the Fed Walks weekends and with that in mind, Bushwalking Victoria do offer assistance to clubs with a number of the administrative tasks associated with FedWalks, such as setting up the web page, developing a budget and managing the booking system. Volunteers from previous events are also willing to assist with coordinating the walks booklet and maps but we do need an Activities Coordinator to pull together a walks program for the weekend and organise the walks leaders, recce’s etc.

If you know of someone who may be interested in becoming part of the team, please contact robyn@bushwalkingvictoria.org.au.

We would also like to improve our future planning for FedWalks by hearing from clubs who may be interested in hosting a future event. FedWalks can then move around the State and we can share the joy! Please get in touch if you would like to know more.

Acknowledgement of Risk
There have been a few queries from clubs recently on the requirement of members to complete an Acknowledgement of Risk form each year. These forms are a requirement of Bushwalking Australia who negotiate with insurance brokers on behalf of bushwalkers to obtain our club  insurances.  The form is part of our clubs’ risk management practices and reminds members of their personal responsibility in being part of a club.  It is in no way intended to be a waiver of a duty of care and is required for ALL insurances, not just the Personal Accident cover. Please ensure that you are getting all members to sign the form each year. The latest version of the Acknowledgement of Risk may be found on the Bushwalking Australia website HERE. (Note: if your club does not offer abseiling or “above the snowline” activities you may remove references to those activities).

Communications Update

Newsletter Contributions
The BWV monthly newsletter is distributed to around 5,000 subscribers and is a good opportunity for some free publicity for your club.  The articles that make our monthly bulletin interesting are often those that come to us from our clubs.  If you have an interesting item or photo to share, no matter how short it may be, please send it in by the 23rd of the month for consideration for our bulletin.

Many clubs forward their newsletters to BWV each month and we often borrow items from them to share with our subscribers.  If your club produces a newsletter, we would appreciate it if you could add admin@bushwalkingvictoria.org.au to your distribution list.

Club Communications
Alan has recently contacted clubs to set up a club user login and update the club contact details and profile contained on the BWV Website. This will ensure we are sending our updates to the right people.  Most clubs have now completed this task and the new information looks brilliant. We hope that it generates more membership enquiries for your clubs.
Board Minutes
