EHR to transform patient care across Children’s Health Ireland
When the new children’s hospital opens – as Ireland’s first designed-to-be-digital hospital – it will be equipped with a state-of-the-art electronic health record (EHR) system supplied by Epic, a world leader in EHR technology.
An EHR is a digital medical record. A patient’s information will be entered into the EHR by clinicians caring for children who are inpatients or outpatients at CHI facilities.
Currently, CHI uses different information technology systems and paper files to record and track patient care. This means it can take a significant amount of time and effort for a clinician to view a child’s complete medical information.
The paperless EHR system will replace many of these existing digital systems and paper records, providing access to a single source of information about each patient, and freeing up time for clinical teams to spend directly on a child’s care.
“The EHR will transform the way we care for our patients,” said Professor Neil O’Hare, CHI’s Chief Information Officer. “By bringing together multiple systems, we can provide a single hospital service wherever our patients are treated across CHI. When our patients stay or visit, they will notice an all-round better experience, and they won’t have to repeat the same information to different members of staff.”
CHI’s EHR system will feature a patient portal to provide parents with access to their child’s medical records, and enable them to view, and in some cases amend, appointments and more actively engage with their child’s clinicians.
