A Digital Newsletter from Children's Health Ireland December 2022

A message from Eilish Hardiman, Chief Executive,
It was a significant year in 2022 for Children’s Health Ireland. We are experiencing unprecedented Winter Pressures in Children’s Health Ireland. There are high levels of viruses in the community this winter, families have not experienced illness in their children who were born during Covid-19 lockdown and we have some very sick babies and children presenting to our Emergency Departments and Emergency Care Units who need acute care. Our staff teams are responding accordingly and the best contingency plans are in place to support families, children and young persons this Christmas.

I want to share some recent milestones that have enabled us to continue our vision, mission and values as we continue our journey towards the New Children’s Hospital which 70% of the building is completed on the campus shared with St. James’s Hospital.
Some Milestones in 2022:
  • We have made significant progress  this year to increase the number of spinal surgeries undertaken, up by 152 (54%) on the same period last year. Long waiting times have also been reduced with 32% fewer children waiting greater than 12 months and 24% less waiting greater than 4 months for in-patient care.
  • We continue to implement our model of care as we work towards the new hospital. Our neonatal service (premature and sick new-born babies) in Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin marked a major step in November 2022 on the way to delivering the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the new children’s hospital and providing world-class neonatal care.
  • We are the 9th Cancer Centre in the Irish healthcare system, currently providing cancer services for children and adolescents up to 16 years of age as the hub of a network of cancer services.
  • Our 4 academic partners of UCD, TCD, RCSI and DCU have collectively agreed to set up a paediatric academic health sciences centre to drive our vision for integrating health services with research, education and innovation to support better outcomes for patients and attract and retain the best staff.
  • We procured our Electronic Healthcare Record (Epic) for our new hospital. It will support safer care, better patient experience and provide a paper light environment as a new Digital Hospital.
  • We launched our 1st conference on Global Child Health: Communities Healing the world in Crisis in October.
  • We have commenced work on our new Children’s Health Ireland website which will be ready in Spring 2023.
  • We are continuing our close partnership with our main charity partner, Children’s Health Foundation
  • We celebrated CHI at Temple Street being 150 years old and marking CHI at Tallaght on the 1st year since their opening of its Emergency Care and Outpatient Unit
A special Christmas wish to our staff teams. None of this is possible without our biggest asset, our staff. They provide the essential factor to make our future possible. I am in awe of the care and treatment given to children, young people and families by staff. Wishing all our families, children and young persons a very Happy Holiday season and a Healthy New Year. A special thanks to staff working over Christmas and New Year.

 Eilísh Hardiman, Chief Executive

Neonatal services marking a major milestone

Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin, marked a major step on the way to delivering the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the new children’s hospital and providing world-class neonatal care. The 18-bedded Unit in CHI at Crumlin includes six neonatal high dependency beds for babies with additional care needs.
Together with six well-established neonatal high dependency beds in CHI at Temple Street, this will provide long-planned specialised cots for a particularly vulnerable group of patients.  The new unit, which will transfer directly into the new children’s hospital, will also contain specialist equipment, suitable for taking care of small and delicate babies. Particular thanks to Children’s Health Foundation who are making this possible.  Read more

CHI Global Health Department Officially Launched

CHI officially launched its Global Health Department on 24th October at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland at an inaugural conference; “Global Child Health: Communities Healing a World in Crisis.”

The hybrid in-person/remote event was opened by CHI CEO Eilísh Hardiman, who played an important role in the Department’s creation, and featured a broad range of speakers from Ireland and abroad.

The conference served as an opportunity to share a wealth of knowledge from a combined experience of many decades in global health; to discuss lessons learned; to exchange ideas on how to make global health more effective; and to forge new partnerships.  Read more here

Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister Stephen Donnelly visited the new children’s hospital construction site  on Friday 18th November 2022 to view the substantial progress that has been achieved on the project.

  • Taoiseach plants the 1st of 400 trees destined for the 4 acres of gardens and open spaces planned within the 12-acre grounds of the new children’s hospital . Read full story here

EHR to transform patient care across Children’s Health Ireland

When the new children’s hospital opens – as Ireland’s first designed-to-be-digital hospital – it will be equipped with a state-of-the-art electronic health record (EHR) system supplied by Epic, a world leader in EHR technology.

An EHR is a digital medical record. A patient’s information will be entered into the EHR by clinicians caring for children who are inpatients or outpatients at CHI facilities.

Currently, CHI uses different information technology systems and paper files to record and track patient care. This means it can take a significant amount of time and effort for a clinician to view a child’s complete medical information.

The paperless EHR system will replace many of these existing digital systems and paper records, providing access to a single source of information about each patient, and freeing up time for clinical teams to spend directly on a child’s care.

“The EHR will transform the way we care for our patients,” said Professor Neil O’Hare, CHI’s Chief Information Officer. “By bringing together multiple systems, we can provide a single hospital service wherever our patients are treated across CHI. When our patients stay or visit, they will notice an all-round better experience, and they won’t have to repeat the same information to different members of staff.”

CHI’s EHR system will feature a patient portal to provide parents with access to their child’s medical records, and enable them to view, and in some cases amend, appointments and more actively engage with their child’s clinicians.
