Merry Christmas from ABC!

I bring you season’s greetings from all of us here at American Baptist College. As we bring this semester and this year to a close, please take a moment to celebrate and appreciate all that you have, and all those who are special to you. I also encourage you to slow your pace enough to recognize the true reason for the season, the birth of the Christ Child.

In this season and always, there is goodness, there is joy, there is peace. Happy holidays!

— President Forrest Harris

Fraternity Gift Establishes Endowed Scholarship for Lafayette

At their 42nd annual scholarship luncheon, members of the Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity announced a gift of $10,000 toward an endowed scholarship at American Baptist College in honor of alumnus and fraternity member Rev. Dr. Bernard Lafayette. Dennie Marshall, chair of the American Baptist College Board of Trustees, also chairs the Tau Lambda scholarship luncheon committee.

In a recorded conversation with Lafayette on ABC’s campus this fall, Marshall praised the civil rights icon for his life’s work. Of his time at ABC and beyond, Marshall noted that Lafayette “labored physically, emotionally, and mentally to help change the world for the better.”

Students, Staff, and Sneakers

The first-ever ABC Sneaker Ball, sponsored by the College’s Student Success department, was held on Friday, December 2. It was a fun fellowship opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to wind down the semester and prepare for Reading Week and final exams.

“The Sneaker Ball was a great success,” said Student Success Director Nicole Harris-Tolliver. “It was a time to gather as the ABC community to celebrate our efforts and the close of another year.”

“It was a very vivacious atmosphere,” said DaWayne Evans, a freshman from Racine, Wisc. “I enjoyed it a great deal and look forward to similar events in the future.”

Happy Birthday, Susie McClure

Dr. Susie McClure, a community leader and former member of the American Baptist College Board of Trustees, celebrated her 107th birthday on December 5.

A member of Fifteenth Avenue Baptist Church in Nashville, McClure has worked with churches throughout the state and nation throughout her lifetime. The campus library is named in her honor, and in 2019 she was the recipient of ABC’s Nannie Helen Burroughs Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Mental Wellness: New Year, New Me”

ABC’s “Coming Back from COVID-19” team wrapped up the fall Lunch & Learn series with a presentation by Dr. Bearlyn Ash on protecting your own mental well-being into the new year. Ash is a mental health professional with nearly 20 years of experience as a clinician working with adults, children, and adolescents, as well as groups and couples.

Ash quoted media entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey in encouraging a positive mental attitude. “If you look at what you have in life, you’ll always have enough. If you look at what you don’t have, you’ll always want more.” She went on to offer several tips for mental well-being, such as setting intentions, envisioning what you desire, and remaining connected to those who inspire you.
“Just like a golf pencil, life doesn’t come with an eraser,” Ash said. “Mistakes happen, and we must learn to move on.”

The “Coming Back from COVID-19” Lunch & Learn Series is paid for with funding provided by the U.S. government’s Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) Act to address and/or mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Campaign for
American Baptist College

ABC Senior Chief Advancement Officer Dr. Phyllis Qualls spoke during the worship service at Jefferson Street Baptist Church on Sunday, December 4, regarding the inaugural stage of the Campaign for American Baptist College.  The campaign has a goal of visiting churches and organizations to speak briefly about the “Road to 100 in 2024” and ABC’s students, programs, and services.
Qualls was warmly welcomed by the congregation and Rev. Aaron Marble, who committed to continuing to support ABC, especially On the Road to 100. Plans to visit other churches and organizations throughout the city, state, nation, and beyond will be scheduled and announced in the coming months.

"We are telling the American Baptist College story for advocacy, increased student enrollment, and financial support," said Qualls. “Anyone who would like to schedule a visit for their church or organization can contact Jeremiah Parks at jlparks@abcnash.edu.”

SGA President Harmonie Hall was among those in attendance. “We had an amazing time,” she said. “Thank you, Senator Gilmore, for your 30 years of community service, and congratulations on 50 years of marriage, and 70 years of a blessed life. It was an honor celebrating you.”

Parks Installed as Senior Pastor of Owensboro Church

ABC alumnus and Alumni Relations and Grants Coordinator Jeremiah Parks was installed this month as the senior pastor of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Owensboro, Ky. The ceremony was attended by more than 100 people representing the Owensboro community, ABC, and congregations from throughout the country. Many ABC graduates, including Parks’ father, Rev. Dr. George Parks Sr., and brother, Rev. Dr. George Parks Jr., were part of the program. ABC Executive Vice President Richard Jackson brought greetings on behalf of the College and President Forrest Harris.

“Mt. Calvary has received me with open arms,” said Parks, who was named pastor in September. “We have already experienced in this short time what God can do when God’s people seek to accomplish God’s purpose. Our future is bright and our commitment to the cause of Christ is strong as ever.”
