2021-2022 In Review

Content Spotlight:

2021-2022 Highlights:

#MediaFest22 Student Journalism Conference
Student Media professional staff and student leaders attended the Associated Collegiate Press' annual conference in Washington, D.C. this October, the highlight of which was a keynote conversation featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame. 50 years after the duo's investigative reporting led to the resignation of a president, they shared some advice for young journalists: “We have an obligation to be fair, to present both sides in proportion to what we, as reporters, evaluate the information. It doesn’t mean giving equal amounts of space.”

Mason LIFE Interns
Student Media welcomed three Mason LIFE interns this fall: Patrick Foraker (left) wrote the first act of a play and song lyrics; Mohammad Nadeem developed podcasting and interviewing skills; and Forrest Allen (right) continued his "Into the Woods" podcast. Listen here >

Presidential Podcast
Student Media was proud to host Dr. Gregory Washington in our Johnson Center radio studios again this semester as he interviewed faculty members and special guests for Mason's "Access to Excellence" podcast.

Mason Votes and the Society of Professional Journalists hosted a "Get Out The Vote" cookie decorating contest to encourage the #MasonNation to vote. Winners received prizes donated by the Bookstore and Spice Corner restaurant.
Fourth Estate's "Kindness Ambassadors"
Four members of the Fourth Estate staff were named 2022-2023 Kindness Ambassadors (left to right): Jalen Stubbs, Managing Editor; Brad Byrne, Editor-in-Chief; Erica Munisar, incoming News Editor; and Taylor Ramirez, Opinion Editor. According to the Mason Chooses Kindness initiative's website, Kindness Ambassadors are selected "for the ways in which they embody kindness and work to share it with others."

Volition Open Mic Nights
Volition continued their longstanding tradition of hosting two Open Mic Nights each semester in the JC Bistro. In late October, they partnered with sci-fi/fantasy magazine The Forge on a spooky evening of student performances that brought together Mason's artistic community.

Literary Submit-A-Thon
Graduate literary journals Phoebe and So to Speak co-hosted a "Submit-A-Thon" event to encourage Mason writers to submit their work for publication. A tip sheet our editors created included advice like "keep cover letters simple," learn to "accept rejection," and "read fine print."

Sports Broadcasting Team Honored for Excellence
Associate Director David Carroll (right) and the Sports Broadcasting Team were honored by Brad Edwards (left) at the May 2021 Green and Gold Celebration for their "vital role as Intercollegiate Athletics' primary streaming and broadcast partner." Producing over 100 live streams of Mason athletic events each year that air on ESPN+, the team was cited for "it's mission of preparing tomorrow's media professionals with vital hands-on experience in television production."
