• Less parking, fewer cars
  The Madison City Council is set to vote on whether to impose rules on new developments that would require them to reduce vehicle traffic, a move officials see as a way to curb carbon emissions and the city’s reliance on cars.
• Keystone pipeline shut after 14,000-barrel oil spill in Kansas
  It is the third spill of several thousand barrels of crude on the pipeline since it first opened in 2010. 
• Madison receives EPA funding to improve air quality monitoring and tackle health disparities
  The City of Madison will lead a collaborative project to install a city-wide network of 68 air quality sensors to monitor particulate matter pollution and support greater awareness, education and action.
• DOE announces $8 million to integrate solar energy production with farming
  The funding supports agrivoltaics—the co-location of agricultural production and solar energy generation on the same land—and aims to reduce barriers to utility-and community-scale solar energy deployment while maximizing benefits for farmers and local communities.

Lakeshore Nature Preserve Student Engagement Grants
Each year the Lakeshore Nature Preserve awards several Student Engagement Grants of up to $1000 each to facilitate the use of the Preserve as a resource for education among UW undergraduates. Any student, faculty, or staff member at the UW-Madison may apply. Groups of individuals may submit a proposal as a team. Every individual or team must have at least one faculty or staff member, who is expected to play an active role in overseeing the project. Proposal deadline is March 1.

Wisconsin Idea Fellowship
Wisconsin Idea Fellowships are awarded annually to undergraduate student projects working towards addressing a challenge identified along with a local or global community partner. Fellowships are awarded to semester-long or year-long projects designed by an undergraduate student (or group of students) in collaboration with a community organization and a UW–Madison faculty or academic staff member. Projects can receive up to $7,000 in total funding and students receive 3 academic credits.

UW Arboretum Research Fellowships
We invite research proposals in all areas relevant to the Arboretum mission, including the social sciences. We are particularly interested in restoration ecology, invasive species monitoring and management, stormwater impacts, horticulture, visitor experiences, citizen science, public engagement, K–12 outdoor education, and the collection and analysis of long-term monitoring data at remnant and restored sites. Proposals may address any of these areas or others that wisely utilize Arboretum land and other resources. Arboretum Research Fellowships (3–5 awards per year) can include summer stipend, undergraduate research assistants, materials, analyses, or other research needs for up to $8,000. 

FreshWater@UW Summer Research Scholars
The UW Aquatic Sciences Center announces an expansion of FreshWater@UW Summer Research Scholar program to all UW System campuses. These are unique opportunities for undergraduates to work closely with water-related faculty mentors and graduate students in their major discipline. Students accepted into the research program are matched with faculty whose expertise and interests match that of the student.
