16th Annual Muslim Studies Program Conference

Measuring Muslim Publics: Curves, Columns, Spheres, and Squares

Conference Dates: February 23 – 24, 2023
Michigan State University, International Center

Michigan State University is hosting an international conference entitled “Measuring Muslim Publics: Curves, Columns, Spheres, and Squares.” The conference investigates who is ‘the public’ in public opinion and what effect it has on politics. These questions have received a great deal of attention from scholars of American and European contexts where their contributions have taken on a universalistic overtone. Are these generalized assumptions valid in other societies – notably in Muslim-majority contexts? In addressing these questions, this conference aims to contribute to the interdisciplinary study of public opinion and ‘the public’ in Muslim contexts inside and outside of the Muslim world.

This event is organized by the MSU Muslim Studies Program.

25th Cornell SEAP Graduate Student Conference
Call for Papers

Conference Dates: March 10 – 12, 2023
Cornell University, Kahin Center
Abstract Submission Deadline: December 20, 2022
Online Abstract Submission

Scholarship is forever a site of tension between the intellectual inheritance of one’s discipline and the magnificent potentiality of original research. Between opposing pulls of past and future we notch our arrows, set our sights, and take flight into newly imagined terrains of research, political struggle, and creative expression. On the occasion of the Cornell Southeast Asian Program (SEAP) Graduate Student Conference’s 25th anniversary, we reflect on origins, destinations, and all the hurdles in between.

The 25th SEAP Graduate Student Conference will be held in a hybrid format on 10–12 March, 2023 at Cornell University’s George McT. Kahin Center for Advanced Research on Southeast Asia in Ithaca, New York and on Zoom.

For more information, please visit the Cornell Events Website
This conference is organized by Cornell University.

ANP 822: Religion and Ritual

Every Friday
11:30 a.m - 2:30 p.m. ET

218B Berkey Hall
Professor: Dr. Mara Leichtman

This seminar explores anthropological approaches to the study of religion and is balanced between select classics and important topics in the present-day body of literature. When analyzing recent scholarship, we will keep in mind both historical context and the development of the field through reading theoretical overviews and related case studies. Seminal works on “witchcraft,” “magic,” and ritual provide exposure to the cross-cultural comparison of religious ideologies, values, and practices. We will survey world religions such as Christianity and Islam, both comparatively and in the contexts of global Christian child sponsorship and Islamist foreign fighters who reject secular norms. Topics will include the study of Indian and African religions, and will introduce current debates on decolonizing religious studies to bring in feminist, queer, and indigenous perspectives. The course will conclude with selections from the growing body of literature on secularism, and will consider religious minorities and religious pluralism, with case studies on Egypt and Nigeria.

Please contact maral@msu.edu for an override.
