Dear Friend,

Warmest greetings from The Hague!

I’m Angela Mudukuti, a Senior Legal Advisor at the Global Justice Center, reaching out to share an update from the International Criminal Court’s Assembly of States Parties (ASP)!

GJC President Akila Radhakrishnan and I had an energizing and enriching week here in The Hague for the 21st Annual ASP, where states meet to discuss and decide critical matters related to the ICC’s operations. Civil society organizations like GJC are present to monitor and advocate on a range of pertinent issues, and participate in and host events related to our work.

GJC has been working relentlessly to advance our strategy on feminist multilateralism to ensure the most equitable defense and advancement of human rights worldwide. To this end, we collaborated with partners in four exciting side events at ASP, covering important issues like vetting candidates for ICC elections, judicial selection and trial management at international criminal tribunals, intersectionality and slavery crimes, and options for justice in Myanmar. These discussions brought together a variety of actors, including feminist legal experts such as Patricia Sellers, the ICC Special Adviser on Slavery Crimes, Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK President Tun Khin, and Karim Khan, Prosecutor at the ICC, to name but a few.

On the far right, you’ll see me sharing remarks during our event “In Pursuit of Intersectional Justice at the International Criminal Court and Beyond: A closer look at the intersectional dimensions of slavery crimes,” hosted by Emergent Justice Collective, GJC, Justice Rapid Response, and Center for Justice and Accountability.
Moving forward with our multilateralism strategy, we will continue to encourage the ICC to pursue a gender-sensitive approach to justice and advocate for gender parity in senior positions of power in multilateral fora. The ICC has a long way to go in this respect; as of March 2022, 81 percent of female staff at the ICC hold low-level positions – this has to change!

We need your support now more than ever to sustain and strengthen our fight.

As the end of the year fast approaches, could you boost our legal advocacy work by donating today? All gifts up to $30,000 will be MATCHED through December 31 by a group of generous donors!

I hope you’ll support our movement for equality and help grow GJC’s legal advocacy work.
Match My Gift

In solidarity,
Angela Mudukuti
Senior Legal Advisor

P.S. In case you missed it, the ICC upheld its historic first conviction of forced pregnancy as a war crime and a crime against humanity which affirmed our analysis. For more updates on our work, you can follow me on Twitter @AngelaMudukuti.
