We have signed Hardcovers of
Dread Nation and Deathless Divide courtesy of Justina Ireland!!

We love Justina Ireland's Dread Nation, but do not take our word for it! D. Lee says:

Brilliant, honestly. Civil war-era Zombie YA AU, you say? My first thought was, sign my shit up, and that was before I knew that it involved:

  • a damn near prescient thread about residential schools for Native- and African- Americans
  • the struggle with the ridiculous difference in how a woman is treated being white-passing versus being obviously Black that only seems to have changed shape in the last 150 years
  • enemies-to-bffs trope executed beautifully
  • problematic relationships with parents
  • treacherous boarding schools
  • using religion as a bludgeon
  • failed utopias
  • a bisexual MC who has a weakness for clever men and is well aware of it
  • fantastic prose and some next-level insight into human behaviors

There is literally nothing about this book I would change, and I'm just sad that Ireland has said this is only a duology (with some short stories in the 'verse). I realize that sounds crazy to say about zombie AU YA, but honestly. It's so. good. Can't wait to read the sequel.

HELP US GET "TO BOLDLY GO" ON THE VIEW!

We ask for a lot, we know! But Angela Dalton and Lauren Semmer are really cool, and their children's book about Nichelle Nichols is amazing. We want the world to know about it regardless of how much marketing the publisher puts behind it.  Therefore, we are calling The View producers to let them know about the book, and hope you will too. See details below.

Script:
"This is for The View producers. I am [NAME] and my favorite bookstore, Sistah Scifi, wanted me to let you know that there's a new children's book called To Boldly Go: How Nichelle Nichols and Star Trek Helped Advance Civil Rights by Angela Dalton and Lauren Semmer. I think Whoopie Goldberg would love it and should have Angela and Lauren on The View."

Calling:

Call 1(818) 460-7477 at any time throughout the week. After dialing the number, select “1” for ABC programming, “2” to leave a comment or “3” for daytime programming. Entering the code “849” allows you to record a 30-second message for The View.

Justina Ireland has a new book, Rust in the Root,  and it is good!  Get your signed copy today (or tomorrow or next week, no pressure!)

It is 1937, and Laura Ann Langston lives in an America divided—between those who work the mystical arts and those who do not. Ever since the Great Rust, a catastrophic event that blighted the arcane force called the Dynamism and threw America into disarray, the country has been rebuilding for a better future. And everyone knows the future is industry and technology—otherwise known as Mechomancy—not the traditional mystical arts.

Laura disagrees. A talented young queer mage from Pennsylvania, Laura hopped a portal to New York City on her seventeenth birthday with hopes of earning her mage’s license and becoming something more than a rootworker.

But four months later, she’s got little to show for it other than an empty pocket and broken dreams. With nowhere else to turn, Laura applies for a job with the Bureau of the Arcane’s Conservation Corps, a branch of the US government dedicated to repairing the Dynamism so that Mechomancy can thrive. There she meets the Skylark, a powerful mage with a mysterious past, who reluctantly takes Laura on as an apprentice.
