<<First Name>>,

One of the most important capabilities that we need in our weapon systems is that they repeatedly put rounds where we expect them. We generally refer to this as the "zero" or intersection of "point of aim" and "point of impact" for the firearm and it is absolutely critical to have locked down tight both from a mechanical perspective and from a cognitive perspective.

For handguns with either irons or an optic, we generally zero at 10 yards and then confirm things at 25 yards expecting rounds to be a touch high up laterally where we expect them. For long guns, we generally zero at 50 yards unless specified otherwise by the optic. Based on the caliber, ammo load, and barrel length the round will have a corresponding intersection with the point of aim on the way back down. That distance is beyond the scope of this article due to the complications just specified.

On the mechanical side of zeroing, have a zero shift is a concerning thing. This generally means that the sights/optic/mount are loose, were improperly adjusted, there is something mechanically wrong with the barrel to receiver fitment, the barrel is possibly shot out or there is something wrong with the muzzle device attached to the gun. Having a weapon that is not mechanically zero'd makes it difficult at best to conduct proper training as the rounds will not be impacting where expected. In the real world, a weapon that has a questionable mechanical zero is an absolute liability and should remain in the safe until a confirmed zero can be established.

On the cognitive side of zeroing, we need to mentally account for offset or holdover for the weapon and projectile based on the distance between us and the target.

For a pistol with iron sights, there is very minimal offset aside once past 4 or so yards. At 25 yards and beyond there maybe some rise until the projectile starts to drop. This is based on the ammo used along with the barrel length which determine muzzle velocity along with when the pistol unlocks which can alter the angle of the barrel when the projectile exits the muzzle. For a red dot equipped pistol or a pistol with suppressor height iron sights there is a small degree of offset that is generally not a factor for hits in the main A-zone of a USPSA target but will play a factor in hitting the "credit card" or A-zone in the head box of the target. Do your homework at the range to figure this out before you need to take that critical shot.

On the long-gun side with AR15-style iron sights and optics with standard mounts have 1.75 to 2.75 inches of offset through 15-20ish yards. This means that the shooter needs to account for this distance when engaging targets up close in a room length encounter. It takes deliberate practice to ensure that under pressure the dot is placed those couple inches above where the bullets are expected to go. For those running "extra high" optic mounts, this offset distance is considerably bigger and you will need to adjust/retrain as necessary.

99 times out of a 100 when we miss out intended aiming point, the fault is entirely with the shooter. However, if a group is appearing in a different place than expected then either the shooter is consistently making the same mistake such as driving the gun low and left (more likely with pistols) or there is a mechanical issue with the zero on the weapon that needs to be resolved.
