Throughout 2022, Babies Need Bottoms distributed over 32,000 diapers every month to help keep young children clean, dry and healthy.  As of December 10, over 949,000 diapers have gone to WNC families over the last 5 years, and Babies Need Bottoms is on track to distribute 1 million diapers – with our community’s support – in early 2023.

Parents consistently report receiving our diapers reduces their stress, makes them feel like a better parent and helps them afford other basics for their family, like food, rent and gas. These diapers will have a tremendous impact on the health, well-being and functioning of local children and families.

Babies Need Bottoms is proud to work with over 55 local community partners. In the coming months we would like to highlight our partners, and how each organization is helping meet the needs of the families in our communities. It is only through these partnerships that Babies Need Bottoms can begin to fulfill our mission to improve the lives of babies, toddlers, and parents in Western North Carolina. These relationships foster connection, and help provide needed resources, so that together we can build a stronger community. 

Bounty & Soul is a community non-profit based in Black Mountain, N.C., whose mission is to connect, share, and celebrate healthy produce, nutrition and wellness education, and community. They operate a no cost, eligibility requirement free market on Tuesday and Friday each week in Black Mountain, and another in Swannanoa for native Spanish speakers. These drive-thru markets are for any member of the community seeking healthy food support. 

By partnering with Babies Need Bottoms, they also have been able to add diapers and wipes as an option for families in need of extra support. Over the last 12 months, Babies Need Bottoms was able to provide more than 27,000 diapers to distribute at their markets, providing relief for many families in the area. 

“Babies Need Bottoms is proud of our partnership with Bounty & Soul,” shares Meagan Leimena, Co-Executive Director at Babies Need Bottoms, “We are thrilled together we can help to meet basic needs for families that support their health and well-being. Having diapers and wipes available at their markets is a common sense solution for families struggling to make ends meet who might have to choose between food and diapers. We look forward to deepening our work together!”

We spoke to Michelle Wooley, Director of Philanthropy at Deerfield, about how they got involved with BNB. “Deerfield resident, Ann Baldwin, spoke with me in August of 2021 to tell me about a local non-profit that came to her attention and grabbed her interest: Babies Need Bottoms,” says Wooley. “Ann had noticed that BNB was responding to the hygiene needs of a family that are not addressed through SNAP or other agency assistance.”

“As a retired nurse, Ann's passionate about caring for people's physical needs in practical ways and she advocated for including BNB on our Directed Outreach list and also for hosting a packing party so our residents could get involved and learn more. My goal is to provide volunteer opportunities for residents who may not be able to volunteer regularly off campus,” Wooley elaborates.

Their Fall 2022 packing event had 13 volunteers, who wrapped a whopping 66 packets of diapers in 35 minutes.

“I love bringing projects to our campus. BNB has made this really easy for us and it's something that even older hands can do! It's such meaningful work and well worth our time and energy!!” says Wooley.
