Kingdom Builder Foundation Expresses Gratitude for the Leadership of Steve Goe, and Welcomes New Chair, Jeff Creighton

The beginning of this coming year marks an important moment of transition for  Kingdom Builder Foundation. We bid a grateful farewell to Steve Goe who, as President of KBF these past three years, has steered the organization with tremendous grace and clarity through one of its most significant seasons. Longtime KBF director and incoming president, Jeff Creighton, brings institutional knowledge, vision, and an abiding faith in Christ that will anchor his new leadership. Both Steve and Jeff share their thoughts here as we mark this exciting season of change.

Dear Friends of the Kingdom Builder Foundation:

I am very enthusiastic about the decision of the directors of the Kingdom Builder Foundation Board to elect Jeff Creighton as the incoming Board Chair starting next year. Having served as an SBPC Elder and been involved in many church ministries and committees, Jeff has demonstrated a passion and a  commitment to serve our God.

Please join me in welcoming him into this leadership position and supporting him in prayer.

The last year and a half the leadership of KBF has been in discussion with the
Governance Committee of SBPC Session to reaffirm the relationship between the two entities. In November we signed a joint memorandum of understanding that strengthens the relationship and outlines a commitment to develop a unified stewardship message with SBPC to give members the option of leaving legacy gifts in addition to tithing; reaffirms members’ ability to recommend qualified agencies and missionaries for grant funding; and redefines the role of active elders and the senior pastor on the Board.

This memorandum is a great step forward in moving KBF forward in fulfilling its mission and vision in the Kingdom. Thank you for being a part of our continued success!
Thank you, Steve, for your extraordinary leadership of KBF these many years.

I believe God is doing something special and new through our Church and through Kingdom Builder Foundation as we continue to work for His kingdom purposes.

Looking forward to 2023, the board of Kingdom Builder Foundation will continue to implement the will of our donors to participate in God’s plan for His World through their legacy gifts. We are forever grateful to our membership and friends of SBPC who have made gifts to Kingdom Builder Foundation, the fruits of which they will not experience in this life. As your board, we do not take lightly our commitment to protect, manage and invest these legacy gifts to Christ centered ministries, both locally, and globally, that are aligned with God’s Kingdom purposes. This has been our charter since the Foundation was formed in 2007, and it remains our charter today.

We are pleased to welcome new board members who will begin their service in 2023. Lee Hejmanowski, Debbie Inada, and Drew Hutton will be coming onto our board alongside Dan Farris, Judy Enns, Ericka Southcombe, John Wierick, Danielle Kruger and myself. Our board reflects the active membership of our Church and our desire to be fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

As your new board chair, I am available to any and all members of our Church who have questions about Kingdom Builder Foundation and our role in SBPC’s stewardship philosophy. If you have questions about KBF, legacy giving, or general estate planning issues, please reach out to me directly at jeff@kbfoundation.org.
Announcing Recipients of Fall 2022 Kingdom Builder Foundation Grants

This past fall, after a concerted effort to identify new and returning Christ-centered ministries seeking to expand their impact in the world, the Kingdom Builder Foundation awarded $87,261 in grants, the largest round of funding (separate from designated gifts) in KBF’s 15-year history. Since its inception, KBF has awarded 169 grants for a total of $997,442 in funding for ministry efforts. Congratulations to the following 12 ministries that received grants during the 2022 fall funding cycle:

Amor Ministries (Mexico) – For more than forty years, Amor Ministries has been building homes, providing school supplies, conducting youth programs and distributing food to marginalized families living in Tijuana, Tecate, Rosarito, Puerto Peñasco, and Juarez Mexico. KBF has provided a Fall 2022 grant to help support Amor’s food bank program that feeds 250 families each month. It’s in meeting the physical needs of the families they serve that Amor demonstrates the love of Christ, opening doors to deeper spiritual exploration and growth.

Building for Christ (Mexico) – In partnership with SBPC-supported missionaries, Ellie and Enrique Goolkasian-Lugo, Building for Christ has been planting churches and making Christian disciples in the Baja region of Mexico since 1992. This year, the organization will establish a new church in the town of Jamarillo by renovating a former rehabilitation center into a sanctuary, youth center and parsonage for the church’s pastor. The new church campus will provide a safe and nurturing environment for more than 1,000 of the community’s youth. KBF has provided a grant to help offset renovation costs.

Dream Dinners Foundation (Ecuador) – In partnership with Kids Around the World (KATW), Dream Dinners will utilize KBF funds to help build a learning center where children of an impoverished village will receive daily meals, Bible-based learning activities, as well as safe and healthy play opportunities at the center’s new playground. Project leadership envisions this as a pilot program that can be replicated in as many as 27 other poor communities throughout Ecuador.

Foster Hope Ministries (North San Diego County) – A vibrant ministry of Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, Foster Hope has been meeting the physical and spiritual needs of hundreds of foster youth and their families since 2009. Because of the love they’ve experienced through Foster Hope’s many programs, many youth and their families have expressed interest in being part of the  SBPC worshipping community, but are unable to because of lack of transportation. KBF is bridging this gap by providing a grant to help offset travel costs to and from the church.

Interserve (Pakistan) – In 1996, a surprising number of Hindu and Muslim people in the Sindh province of Pakistan were turning to Christ owing in part to the work of SBPC-supported missionaries, Paul and Pat Stock. Partnering with the Audio Visual Center of the Church of Pakistan, the Stocks helped create a hymnbook of worship songs called “Kirtan Sagher” (“Ocean of Worship”) to encourage growth among new disciples. KBF has provided a grant to print an updated version of the songbook with a treasury of new songs in seven different languages.

The Murbarak Center (Southern California) – This KBF grant will help underwrite English language classes for newly arrived Afghan refugees. English language instruction is a potent expression of love for these families, helping them better understand and navigate what is often a disorienting new culture. What’s more, the classes help open doors to relationships with families who are often eager for connections in their new homeland..

Operation Mobilization (Sudan) – Scripture indicates the Gospel resonates even in unlikely places like the cab of a dusty chariot where Philip shared the Good News with an Ethiopian Eunuch. KBF is helping provide similar evangelistic opportunities in the Sudan by underwriting the purchase of a “tuk-tuk” (3 wheeled, motor-powered taxi) and a year’s supply of gasoline for use by a local missionary. The vehicle will also provide income for the missionary, as well as transportation between church plants.

Pathways to Citizenship (North San Diego County) is a faith-based nonprofit agency that helps immigrants navigate legal and cultural pathways to citizenship, sharing the love of Christ with “strangers in our land” by providing pro-bono and low-cost legal immigration and educational services, including free ESL classes and citizenship tutoring. KBF funding will help offset the cost of an Education Program Coordinator to increase the number of students served.

Solana Beach Community Senior Center (North San Diego County) – KBF grant funds will be used to provide transportation to older adults in the area for weekly meetings at SBPC and to subsidize meals at the meetings. This will enable local seniors to continue to attend the activities and meals where they find true community, fellowship, friendship and the love of Christ.

South American Theological Seminary (Brazil) – The South American Theological Seminary (SATS) was founded in 1994 to teach and practice theology in an interdenominational, evangelical context. SATS has over 4000 alumni serving churches, NGOs, and other Christian organizations in Brazil, Latin America, and around the world. With the help of a KBF grant, the seminary will launch a new three-year program aimed at students who have never had any formal theological training.

Studio Internship (Southern California) – Studio Internship provides an intensive, three-month training program for prospective missionaries preparing for cross-cultural ministry opportunities. KBF will help support a unique element of the program that is part retreat, and part real-world training, simulating conditions trainees may face in the field. The retreat curriculum focuses on self-awareness, connection with God and healthy community life – all key elements for a sustainable and fruitful mission experience.

Young Life—San Diego Metro (El Cajon) – Next Generation Leaders (NGL) is a program developed by Young Life to identify, recruit, train, empower, and cultivate young leaders of color who are called to disciple teens in communities of color. The goal of NGL is to develop young leaders who more fully represent the population of teenagers Young Life is reaching with the gospel. KBF funding will be used to help offset stipends for two young leaders of color.
Our mission is to build God’s Kingdom
by making grants to Christ-centered ministries and missions
through legacy gifts of members and friends of Solana Beach Presbyterian Church.
KBF Welcomes Three New Board Members

In addition to incoming board chair, Jeff Creighton, KBF welcomes three new board members whose three-year terms will begin in January of 2023.  We welcome the following directors to the KBF team:

Debbie Inada has been a member of Solana Beach Presbyterian Church since 1986. In addition to having served as an elder, Debbie has also been part of the Alternative Christmas Market committee for more than 30 years, and was recently a member of the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee. She also serves on the Board of Directors for KBF grantee, Pathways to Citizenship. A graduate of Dartmouth College with an MA in TESOL, Debbie has taught ESL at UCSD Extension for more than 30 years and is a teacher trainer at the Extension school. She has two sons, Dustin and Noah, who live locally.

Drew Hutton and his wife, Doreen, have been members of SBPC for 25 years. Together they taught Sunday School at the church when their four sons were young. Drew has served on the church Nominating Committee three times, has frequently led small groups, has served on the SBPC Governance Committee and All Things Financial, and was an active elder from 2009-2011. An attorney, Drew represents investors and consumers in complex litigation. He credits the SBPC men’s ministry and small groups for growing his faith, strengthening his commitment to justice, and increasing his desire to help grow God’s kingdom. His faith in Christ is a cornerstone of both his family life and his law practice.

Lee Hejmanowski and his late wife, Heather, began attending SBPC in the mid-1990s and became members not long thereafter. He has one daughter who is currently in college. Lee has served as an SBPC elder. He graduated from USC with both accounting and law degrees, and has practiced business and real estate litigation in San Diego since 1983.

Welcome Debbie, Drew and Lee!
Wishing you a wonderful holiday season!

The Advent season can be so filled with holiday activity that it’s easy to overlook year-end financial tasks.

Kingdom Builder Foundation would like to offer a few helpful reminders as 2022 comes to a close:
  1. Make a file for your 2023 tax documents so that you have one location to keep those items as they come in. (If you don’t already have a 2022 file now is the time to add that too)
  2. Assess insurance policies and make any needed adjustments.
  3. Update your emergency contacts
  4. Evaluate your budget
  5. Review your retirement numbers
  6. Determine your investment performance
  7. Update family and friends on any estate changes they should be aware of
  8. Check your tax situation.  Remember: to qualify for this year’s taxes, charitable organizations must receive donations by December 31,2022.
