The Fourth Sunday in Advent

Collect of the Day

O Lord, raise up, we pray thee, thy power, and come among us: and with great might succour us; that whereas, through our sins and wickedness, we are sore let and hindered in running the race that is set before us, thy bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us: through the satisfaction of thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ.

Greetings. It’s been wonderful this Advent to welcome as our preachers through the season some of those of the College of Priests who are with us in the congregation Sunday by Sunday, when not assisting elsewhere. It’s been a reminder of the rich resource we are fortunate to enjoy here - and another reason to be indebted to the splendid ministry here of my predecessor, Fr Neil Bunker, whose initiative it was to establish the College. Perforce its presence and activity have been muted by the Covid years, but as we have welcomed our preachers one by one across the footlights each week it has been to me further evidence of resurgence and promise in yet another aspect of our parochial life.

The retiring collection this Sunday will be for Christmas flowers.

Throughout Advent we are supporting the ministry of St Mary’s Cable Street. There are marked envelopes at the back of church.

For those attending the film outing on 19 December, Fr Andrew will be in the Riverside Bar at the BFI from 5.30pm and the film starts at 6.10pm.

Volunteers are needed on Friday 23 December from 10am to decorate the Church and prepare it for Christmas.

Advent confession times: Confessions will be heard at 5.30pm on Thursday 22 December (Fr Sam Korn), midday on Saturday 24 December (The Vicar) and 10pm on Saturday 24th December (Fr Sam Korn). Any other times by arrangement with the Vicar.

The Crib Service is on Saturday 24th December at 4pm: please do think of any children you know who might be brought to this service.

On Saturday 24 December there will be Carols by Candlelight at 10.30pm followed by Midnight Mass at 11pm.

As the Advent season comes towards its close, you may like to revisit our choir singing Orlando Gibbons's "This is the record of John" from the Advent Carol Service.
