Asian Media Access Condemns Recent Mass Shootings

Many Asian communities celebrated and welcomed the Lunar New Year on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023, but in the back of many people’s minds were the tragedies of what happened just the night before in Monterey Park in California. What was a joyous occasion turned to horror as an Asian gunman opened fire and shot and killed 11 people, and injured 9 more in a ballroom as people gathered to celebrate the new year. Within 48 hours, another mass shooting near San Francisco where 7 Chinese farm workers were shot and killed at two locations. The shooter, from his name, looks to be Chinese.

Collaboration with Trauma Mental Health Responder - Dr. Tracy Wharton

Recent gun violence and hate crimes against Chinese Americans have brought a lot of shock and anger to our community. The suffering is immeasurable with families of those killed and those who survived, and the trauma will have to be managed for years to come.

Fear, anger, and terror take hold when we allow them to flourish in our minds.  Words have power. When we speak about what is on our mind, what scares us, what threatens our communities and our families, we take away some of the power that it has over us.

Do you have questions about how to work through complex emotions? Do you want to talk about what happened or what scares you?

Lunar New Year Celebrations around Twin Cities

With a heavy heart, Asian Media Access and Pan Asian Arts Alliance joined the Mall of America at Jan. 22, 2023 to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Although the tragic shooting in Monterey Park, California has sadden the celebration, but local Asian American communities have come out to showcase our diversity and UNITY that we are all together, while facing the threats of the gun violence.

Our talented and high energy performers excited the whole Mall, audience at all levels/directions cheering for them, and we see clearly that violence cannot and would not crush our spirits. There is a deep reservoir of communal solidarity that we are all in this together, and will continue to create a better world for all!!

AMA Asian Hot Meal Impact Story

One of the recipients of the hot meals is the caregiver of the family that involves taking care of younger children. The children have special dietary needs that make it hard to find affordable and nutritious meals.  During the pandemic, the household experienced short-term financial troubles and sought support to supplement their food. When this individual was seeking supplies at food shelves, they were not just looking for themselves, they were shopping for their entire family. However, in their experience, about half of the food items that they received from food shelves were processed and packaged food, rather than fresh and more natural options. Instead of fresh fruit or vegetables, oftentimes these options were only available as canned goods, and basic necessities such as eggs were hard to come by.  If there were items that were fresh and healthy at times, they were close to their expiration dates. Due to the nature of this, they felt that they needed to visit food shelves often because the food would not last them. However, due to her busy schedules, including odd hours at work, she could not always make the trips because they could not make the times available. This made their experience with food shelves sometimes difficult, and especially hard to navigate when they really needed them.

Dancing is fun but also, as a therapy amongst the youth, is a great stress reliever, not only because it is great physically for the body, but it is also emotionally therapeutic. Dancing improves mental health. Since movement can be related to thoughts and feelings, dancing can instantly change emotions and attitudes.

We want fathers to connect with their daughters and sons and inspire other dads to build strong relationships with their children.
