Winter Solstice Greetings, Comrade,

O Vey in a Manger
(apologies, title lifted from a show in S.F.)

Every year, I do the Holy Days’ observance to different beats.  This year, knowing Baby Jesus’ fate in the mythologem ahead of him, I want to make BJ giggle a little.

“The Madonna and Child with St. John”
By Leon Perrault, 1832-1908
Before the LAPD and FBI start investigating, let me state I am not into “kiddie porn.”  As a gay man, however, I always liked this painting because of its origins in the New Testament where Jesus says something like, of his twelve Disciples, he loved John the most.  Throughout the world, there are multitudinous churches named “St. John, the Beloved.”  Smells queer, doesn’t it?

Two things always joyously caught my attention about this painting.  First, look at that lip lock. Whew!  Second, look at Mary’s hands.  She’s not pulling them apart; she is pushing them together.  OMG.  Based on this painting, Mary could very easily become the Den Mother to a radical Gay Liberation cell or the Patron Saint of PFLAG.

Baby Jesus, I see a smile on your face.  Listen to the next one.
LA CUCARACHA

Every morning during breakfast, I scan two national newspapers and then always begin my work in the world for the day by reading the comic pages in the Los Angeles Times.  One of my favorites is “LA CUCARACHA” by Lalo Alcaraz.  Recently, there was a series about Baby Jesus as a refugee from the Middle East in which BJ is called “Refujesus.”

BJ, I see that one made you giggle.  I know you’ll love Lio.
Lio Loves Zombie Boy

Another of my favorite daily cartoons is Lio by Mark Tatulli.  Jesus has often told the world, but few listen, that as you love the least among us, thereby, you shall love me.  Lio falls in love with another boy, they break up, Lio’s heart is broken.

You liked that one, didn’t you, Baby Jesus.  Did Lio’s friend, who helped tape his heart back together again, look like a phallic symbol to you, BJ? I thought so too.
Well, “the cattle are lowing, the poor baby wakes,” so what’s up BJ?  How about singing some Christmas carols?  What, you want to listen to the “Red Hot Chili Peppers.”  Well, Mary and Joseph are outside talking with the Three Wise Men.  So, here it goes.

BJ enjoys gay men.  They let him breath outside the hetero box.  It’s the Christian Brand that makes him very sad.  BJ is pleased to hear that in the United States, many no longer call themselves “Christian” but “Followers of Jesus.”  It’s trending.
Danny Battista and Don Kilhefner, co-producers of “Gay Tribal Elder,” wish that whatever the coming of the light means to you at Winter Solstice, may it shine brightly all the new year long.
