Hello to all,
The Association wishes everyone a pleasant holiday season and a very Happy New Year in 2023. Enjoy the winter season and the pleasures that nature offers!
You have probably heard that the city intends to proceed with the installation of an automated boat washing station. This is a complex initiative and we hope that the municipality will succeed in putting in place a process that will produce the desired result. All boats put in the water must be free of contaminants of any kind. Of course, the city can count on us to help plan this project, taking into account the many difficulties involved.
You can now consult the minutes (with appendices) of the Association's annual general meeting, held on October 14, on the APPLL website.
The municipality is making progress in its mission to protect the environment and its efforts focus on Lake Lyster and Baldwin’s Mills. As a result, an environmental full-time employment position has recently been opened.
The Conseil régional en environnement de l'Estrie (CREE) held a virtual meeting on Tuesday, December 13. This meeting brought together a large number of participants from various backgrounds, all involved in environmental protection. The objective was to share information and, above all, to engage all these organizations in the implementation of a consultation strategy. Members of the APPLL Board of Directors participated. The central theme of the meeting was IAS (invasive alien species). At Lake Lyster we have two aquatic IAS that are of concern now. Eurasian watermilfoil is proliferating and we are trying to prevent the introduction of zebra mussels. In addition we also have terrestrial IAS such as glossy buckthorn (alder buckthorn), Japanese knotweed and phragmites (common reed). When researching these threats, there is a lot of emerging knowledge that is in development. For example, the simple measurement of calcium levels that are conducive to zebra mussel proliferation has yet to be reliably established scientifically.
Finally, we always invite you to share your questions or information that concerns the environment.
