On Monday 12 December,  at an event in Trinity College Dublin, One Family with academic researchers launched a Research Report and Best Practice Guidelines on Contact Time for Infants and Young Children in Separated Families.

We see through our work with  families that parents often struggle to determine how to best share the parenting of their young children. This can be extremely challenging for parents and children alike, particularly in situations where there is conflict, abuse and/or limited contact between parents.

To research this area and determine a best practice set of guidelines for parents and professionals, One Family commissioned a joint team from University College Cork and Trinity College Dublin  to research Guidance on Contact Time for Infants and Young Children in Separated Families. The research was conducted by Dr Simone Mc Caughren, Dr Stephanie Holt, Dr Aisling Parkes and Soma Gregory and was funded by the Late, Late Toy Show Appeal and Community Foundation of Ireland. The best practice guidelines were developed by One Family using the research findings. Please click on the link below to read the research report and best practice guidelines.

New One Family Strategy
2022-2024

One Family has launched our new organisational strategy for 2022-2024. This strategy was developed following a comprehensive consultation exercise with staff, our board and hundreds of families, funders, policy makers, and other service providers. We also conducted a comprehensive review of all aspects of our organisation and the external environment in which we operate. The strategy has three pillars 1) Family Support Strategy, 2) Represent, champion and celebrate and 3) Sustaining a strong organisation.

Media and Policy

This month, we welcomed the launch of the Joint Oireachtas Committee report on #GenderEquality which includes strong recommendations regarding Constitutional change for #familyequality. This report is a watershed moment for one-parent families. It not only recommends equal constitutional recognition for all families, but includes steps to reduce poverty such as benchmarking social welfare against #MESL & establishing an independent #ChildMaintenance agency.

Read the report in the link below:

Issues facing one-parent families have been prominent in the media with One Family and other NGOs advocating on behalf of families. Please see below a selection of stories from the month:

Radio and News Articles

One Family, Rainbows Ireland and Ozanam House are working together with the support of Toy Show Funding to roll out Rainbows Groups for children.

Groups start on Oct 17th and will be running until June 2023.

The Rainbows Ireland service is an inclusive service, supporting children and young people experiencing grief and loss resulting from bereavement/parental separation/parental relationship breakdown /divorce. Attending the programme provides children with an opportunity to meet with other children of a similar age and loss experience.

We will work to engage their parent in a 6-week programme, so they feel more able to support their child following an experience of loss through separation or bereavement.

We are open to all queries - you are welcome to call into Ozanam House on Monday or Tuesday to meet with Roisin for more details also.

Please share this project with your colleagues – there is no catchment area.
