‘Illustrating Futures: Graphic Medicine as Treatment for Mental Health in Children and Young People’

The Provocations Seminar Series was launched in July 2021 with the first of six seminars, which looked at Racialised Consciousness using literary texts. Some of the participants from this seminar are now developing projects with an English literature academic to explore the use of stories in enabling conversations between patients and clinicians. One project is focused on stories as a way for patients from underserved ethnic minorities to talk about their experiences of pain.
Since then, we have held two more seminars – looking at Public Health messages using Linguistics, and Music and Mental Health. You can see more about these workshops here. Outcomes from these seminars have included:
Ideas for exploring the impact of language used during treatment on health outcomes
Access to linguistic tools for assessing the ‘readability’ of text used in clinical practice and/or research.
Our next seminar in the series, Illustrating Futures: Graphic Medicine as Treatment for Mental Health in Children and Young People’ will be led by Dr David Hering, Senior Lecturer in English from the University of Liverpool and Co-Director at the Centre for New and International Writing. The Seminar will take place on the 22nd February 2023, 1pm – 3.30pm.
In this seminar David will describe a methodology developed in collaboration that tests how graphic medicine can be used to address and treat mental illness in young people by combining the abilities of Higher Education Institutions, charities and social enterprises and major arts institutions through the medium of comics and visual art. This model comes from Illustrating Futures, a collaboration between the University of Liverpool, UK-based charity and social enterprise Comics Youth and Tate Galleries.
The session will outline how this collaborative model, which evolved from small workshops to larger scale public events, aims to give young people the space to both reflect on and create their own comics that address their mental health.
We hope the discussion will lead to specific outcomes around the following:
Understanding of the practice of graphic medicine
How collaboration between institutions in the area of graphic medicine might engender greater mental health outcomes for young people
How children and young people can be embedded within their own decision-making around matters of mental health

We aim to identify some clear actions to take forward from each seminar, which might include, but is not limited to, continuing these conversations beyond the lifespan of the sessions - what these actions might be is up to you!
The seminar is facilitated in a way that aims to create a safe, inclusive space in which everyone feels able and empowered to participate and contribute.

It will be led by Professor Lynn Sudbury-Riley from the University of Liverpool’s Management School and will explore two of the findings from their recent research with people who lost relatives to COVID-19.
