AFC-TX Applauds Special Education Funding Commission for Recommending Special Needs ESAs

AUSTIN – The American Federation for Children - Texas released a statement Monday applauding the Special Education Funding Commission for recommending the Texas Legislature pass a bill creating Education Savings Accounts (ESA’s) for students with special needs. By a vote of 4-to-3 the commission made the recommendation on Friday.

Chairwoman Stacey Neal Combest, Senators Paul Bettencourt and Angela Paxton, and Representative Jacey Jetton all voted in favor of the recommendation.

AFC-TX released the following statement:

"Special needs students in Texas deserve every opportunity to be successful. The Commission’s vote on Friday is the first step in giving these children that opportunity. AFC-TX applauds Chairwoman Combest, Senators Bettencourt and Paxton, and Representative Jetton for their vote and looks forward to working with them this session to provide education savings accounts to those most in need.

"For too long, Texas has been behind the curve in providing educational freedom to its students. Every child in Texas deserves the chance to go to a great school.

The Special Education Commission also recommended the continuation of the Supplemental Special Education Services grant program established in 2021.

The Special Education Funding Commission was established by the Texas Legislature in 2021 to improve school finance for students receiving special education services.
