Board Development Opportunities

Executive Directors Network Conversation

Thu, 5 January 2023, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

This monthly gathering, remote or otherwise, is a chance for experienced or new to the role Executive Directors -- or those working at that level in an organization but perhaps not holding the job title -- to come together to create a safe place to discuss issues, trends, current challenges, and to simply share stories to connect with your family of practice. With no formal agenda in place, topics are diverse, wide ranging, meaningful and hopefully of immediate relevance to those in attendance.

Board Governance Basics

Thu, 26 January 2023, 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Working Board. Governance Board. Executive or Management Board. What does it all mean?

Boards need to govern and support the organization to accomplish its work. Better understanding of Board governance basics and options open to you will help your organization move forward with renewed energy and engagement.

Consensual outcomes, clear lines of authority and better understanding of roles and responsibilities are critical to smoother operations and successful projects.

Learning objectives in this 2 hour ZOOM workshop include:

● Defining Board Governance

● Describing some of the different models

● Recognizing that all Boards must govern, regardless of the Board model

● Clarifying lines of authority for each model

Crisis support for gender-based violence survivors

Alberta’s government is partnering with Women and Gender Equality Canada to provide crisis support to Albertans who are experiencing gender-based violence.e, even though it is normal for volunteer centres across the country to be (at least partially) municipally funded.

When a person is in crisis, they need immediate care. That means knowing who to call in order to be connected directly to the support they need, when they need it.

Crisis hotlines are a lifeline for survivors. Alberta’s government is committed to providing the critical support services survivors need, the moment they need it.

In partnership with Women and Gender Equality Canada, $3 million is being directed to 211 to ensure that the crisis supports Albertans need are there when they need them. This investment will help continue to build a reliable, streamlined 24/7 service that connects Albertans to the resources that serve their urgent needs.

Charity Insights Canada Project (CICP)

The Canadian charitable sector employs more than 10% of the country’s full-time workforce. It is estimated to contribute more than $151 billion annually to its GDP. However, up-to-date data on the sector is critically scarce. The CICP-PCPOB is an ambitious project that will ensure that policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and the general public have accurate, timely, and comprehensive information about the charitable sector in Canada. Through weekly surveys and reports, an online interactive information and training hub, and monthly policy briefs, the Charity Insights Canada Project [CICP]/Projet Canada perspectives des organismes de bienfaisance [PCPOB] will offer an exhaustive overview of the trends, challenges, and opportunities facing the Canadian charitable sector. It will assist policymakers in making evidence-based policy decisions, develop data capacity for practitioners, and expand the knowledge about the charitable sector for all stakeholders, including the general public.

Funded through Carlton University, The Muttart Foundation, Lawson Foundation, Metcalf Foundation, and the Vancouver Foundation.

Results of the first weeks' question: 57% of respondents feel that their ability to deliver on their missions is their greatest asset or strength.

Imagine Canada embarks on a 4-day work week pilot

Shifting to a 4-day work week is something that we have been thinking about for some time now. The pandemic was difficult on all of us. Our staff worked extra hard for a long time, and the lines between personal and professional lives got blurred with everyone working from home. Our mission of strengthening the charitable and nonprofit sector was more relevant than ever in this time of crisis, and we were fully committed to it - as we are now. Going through this experience as a team led to an introspection of how we as an organization support the sector, as well as how we support our staff as an employer.

When they come to work (or log in from home!), we want our employees to feel valued, supported and inspired. Staff self care and wellness became dominant topics of discussion during the pandemic. In 2020, we created the Leadership Council - a cross-functional group formed of staff members from every level of the organization. The Council’s mission is to nurture an inspiring work environment - one where everyone feels included, listened to, invested in and supported so that they can offer their best everyday. Discussions around the idea of shifting to a 4-day work week started to emerge from staff and the idea was taken up by this group.

Strategic Risk Management for Nonprofits

Thursday, January 26, 2023, 9:00-12:00pm with Leslie Tamagi & Mike Grogan

The landscape that nonprofit organizations operate within has changed dramatically over the past three years. Among the many lessons that we have learned is that a vital mission and dedicated staff are not enough to insulate organizations from risk.

Strategic risk management requires thinking about a wide range of future possibilities and being willing to take risks for the good of those you serve in the face of an unknown future. These risks are not managed by rules and policies, but through approaches designed to assess and reduce the probability of negative impacts and leverage opportunities for positive outcomes.

Strategic risks include:

  • Leveraging opportunities to advance your mission
  • Operating without clearly defined strategic priorities
  • Not examining assumptions underlying strategic decisions
  • Not tailoring services based on current and future community needs
  • Not attending to external trends and how they might affect your organization's operation or funding
Cost: $50 or two tickets for $80. Use promo code STRATEGY with two tickets in your cart at checkout
