January 15, 2023

Good morning,

It has been a joy to be back on campus with our students for our first full week of school in 2023. As we continue into January this week will be a time to celebrate with Winter Sports Spirit Week. All Winter Sports will be competing and the week will culminate with a Winter Sports Spirit Rally on Friday and our Basketball Homecoming game.

In addition to celebrating our Winter sports teams, we will also be celebrating our 2022 National Championship Football Team on Thursday, January 19 at 2:00 PM in the school’s gymnasium. Celebrating these remarkable achievements is a joy in our community.

Tomorrow is also Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Although this means a day off of work or school for many, let’s never forget to celebrate the ideals he reminded us to hold true. Never forget to honor the women, men, and children those ideals represent. Dr. King inspired us to act. So on this day I hope we all find our way to honor him and his ideals by not only taking a day of reflection but choosing a day for action.

I hope you all have a blessed Sunday. Below you will find what is in store for the week ahead.

Best,

Kristopher L. Anderson, Ed.D., Class of '04

2023-24 Course Selection Timeline

The course selection window for the 2023-24 school year will open on January 27th. Students will have 2 weeks to self-select the courses they want to take next year through PowerSchool. The portal will close on February 10th at 3 pm. Students will receive training on how to complete this during community time on January 27th.

All freshmen will take part in a 4-year plan workshop, which will be conducted through their religion class on January 24th and 25th. During this workshop, we will go over all of the courses that we offer at Bosco, allowing freshmen to familiarize themselves with our courses, and map out a plan, based on their post-secondary goals.

Counselors will be meeting one-on-one with all students during the month of March to finalize their course selections, and discuss their overall academic progress. Students are more than welcome to come in to speak to their counselor prior to these meetings about their courses, as well.

Finally, families will receive a copy of their requested courses in April, for review. This will be the final opportunity to change course requests.

 AP and Honors Courses

Our policy for selecting AP and honors courses has changed. In order to take any AP or honors courses next year, a student must meet the following criteria:

  •  Attend the mandatory AP/honors meeting for each course they plan to take (see the schedule below). Should a student be absent during the meeting, they will be responsible for meeting with the teacher individually afterward.
  • Complete a contract for each AP/honors course they plan to take. These contracts will be handed out during each AP/honors meeting. The student and a parent/guardian must sign the contract. Students must also have their current teacher complete the recommendation portion of the contract. The teacher who completes the recommendation portion should teach in the same subject area of the course they plan to take (for example, if the student is completing a contract for AP English Language, their 10th grade English teacher would need to complete the recommendation). Students will turn in completed contracts to the front counter in the counseling office. All contracts are due by February 10th at 3 pm.
  • Meet all prerequisites for the course. A new prerequisite requires that students must receive an A in both semesters of a college prep course or an A or B in both semesters of an AP/honors course in that same subject area during this current school year (for example, a student who wants to take AP English Language must meet the stated grade requirements in both semesters of their current 10th grade English course). If a student does not meet the grade requirement, they may also be approved if they met the benchmarks on their most recent standardized testing (STAR or PSAT/PreACT).

St.  John Bosco Strategic Plan  |  Community Survey

St. John Bosco is beginning our Strategic Planning process and we need your help. We would greatly appreciate your time completing our Community Engagement Survey. The purpose of this survey is to better understand what the St. John Bosco community would like the school to prioritize in its upcoming strategic plan. The survey will ask you a variety of questions about the school currently, as well as your hopes and aspirations for the future of the school. It should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. Results from this survey will be used to identify focus areas, and articulate a plan for bringing the community’s collective vision to life. Your response to this survey will be kept anonymous.

We greatly appreciate your feedback!
