Dear friends / Queridos Amigos
(mais informação em Portuguese em baixo)
Here we are in 2023 and it feels like Butoh
(and not just because of the darkness we feel)
I'll explain,
one of the strong elements of Butoh dance
are the constant contradictions
Life and death, love and hate/anger, light and darkness, etc..
The world feels so full of friction right now
on the edge
(was it always like this? probably yes : / )
Feels like we have been literally going back in time,
19th-century colonialism is around the corner,
ancient religious fundamentalism over there,
reenactment of the capitol riots a year later on the other side,
an island trying to be great again finds itself drowning by itself
and the news of climate change crises all over the place
to which, for some reason, many are still deaf and blind
etc....
etc....
etc....
BUT
NO NoNOnoNOnooooo no no
we won't let this blindness bring us down
we won't let this greed break us apart
on the contrary, it is time to come a bit closer :)
closer together, to each other...
I feel lucky to have lived my first days of 2023
teaching in the Renascimento em Danca retreat at Quinta Ten-Chi in Sintra
led by powerful women, dancing with people from all over the world
It was a meaningful act
and
a great revelation
that we are NOT alone
that there are many like us
who want change
who want more
who want a better world <3
and that is heartwarming and that gives me Hope.
Last year I felt the Karavan was once again back on the road
felt very grateful to be performing on the sculptures of my late father
around the world, to travel again to my Brazilian families,
to tour internationally with Pela Nossa Pele
to teach here, there, and everywhere
meeting inspiring open-hearted, brave, and vulnerable people,
and to start the seedings of 2 new performances.
2023 will bring 2 big pregnancies into my creative belly
Homenagem with Naomi Silman in Portugal and Brazil
&
Human Rights Bingo with Silvia Mercuriali in the Uk and hopefully Portugal.
A few days ago I blew out MANY candles for my birthday
hugged by beautiful souls
this is what I wish to you all
to be hugged by love, creativity, hope, action, and creation
&
to not forget
that climate action is not in order to save the planet
but in order to save ourselves
on and in
this beautiful planet
we may call
Home
ate ja
beijinhos

Workshop/ Oficina de BUTOH
Butoh e Metamorphoses
a Poesia das Imagens/ The poetry of images
21 e 22 de Janeiro 11-17h
no Forum Danca- Espaco da Penha, Lisboa
Looks like this workshop is SOLD OUT But Do not worry there will be another workshop at the end of February 25th & 26th more info below...
"Dentro deste corpo, existem várias coisas míticas que ainda dormem intactas... O trabalho é como escavá-las...” – Tatsumi Hijikata, fundador do Butoh

Who is Dancing my Body?
Quem está a Dançar o meu Corpo?
25 e 26 de Fevereiro 11-17h
no Palacio Pancas Palha (compania Olga Roriz), Lisboa
' Even your own arms, deep inside your body feel foreign to you, feel that they do not belong to you. Here lies an important secret. Butoh's radical essence is hidden here' Tatsumi Hijikata

======================================
The main elements that will be explored in the workshop are metamorphoses, dance through imagery, presence, awareness, and the tension between opposites. The aim is to free the body from its mundane preconceived set of gestures and movements and thus allowing us to access a deeper and more authentic essence of movement and archetypal expression. Questioning how Butoh can be translated into a European Body and why is Butoh not just relevant but extremely vital nowadays.
Yael Karavan has more than 25 years of experience in Butoh, during which he had the opportunity to work with the founders of Butoh in Japan: Kazuo Ohno and Motofuji San – wife of Tatsumi Hijikata – as well as with Tadashi Endo and the MAMU dance theatre, Yumiko Yoshioka and Ten-Pen-Chi, Sankai Juku, Atsushi Takenuchi, Minako Seki, Carlota Ikeda, Yuko Kawamoto, Akira Kasai, Natsu Nakajuma among others.

Homenagem
A new performance in collaboration with
Naomi Silman from LUME TEATRO, Brazil
Primeira partilha dia 24 de Fevereiro 20h30 Brazilian Time/ 23h30 Portugal.
Photo from Kalipety village Brazil
We have started our first phase of Research, Development, and Creation in mid-October, working with Chris and Raquel from Lume Teatro (thank you, Obrigada it was so very valuable and inspiring), two Biologists and with the Guarani and Kariri Xoko Indigenous tribes. A big thank you also to Michel from Ikatupe and Jera from Kalipety indigenous village where we were hosted for 2 magical days. This project has now taken off and we are so very excited and frightened by the grandeur of the challenge. The premiere should be presented in Lume Teatro and Feteag Festival in Recife in September 2023, then in Faro- Teatro das figuras and Lisbon.

Human Rights Bingo is Back in its LIVE version!
30th Jan -5th of Feb we will be in residence at BAC, London
+
a scratch night on the 4th of Feb more info soon!
created and performed in collaboration with sorelitta, Silvia Mercuriali
as well as Ilustrator Izhar Cohen, props by Tim Harbridge, costumes by Lucy Bradridge and more
Conceptually ingenious, this interactive show is part competition, part comedy, and part learning experience in multiple senses... The transition to an online show is cleanly achieved, building a sense of community among theparticipants who are clearly instructed how to play.
★★★★TheReviewsHub
Bingo! is a wild reimagining of the familiar game. Karavan and Mercuriali are extremely likable, and juggle the unpredictability of an interactive audience with impressive spontaneity... It’s a nudge to let ourselves off the hook, but remember our rights.
★★★★TheUpComing
It’s all weaved together cleverly, and delivered with great gusto by our two energetic performers, who hold the space admirably – with disco-dancing and clever quipping a plenty. Jolly good fun, and educational to boot! Total Theatre - Dorothy Max Prior
Audience feedback
It was fun. Great energy. Sense of humour. Creative and lots of talent. Wonderful illustrations. We had a great time, learning while laughing, thinking while playing.
Thank you, Yael and Silvia. This was my best zoom experience!
This time with the aim of performing in a REAL BINGO hall!
Watch this space for more updated dates
It's gonna be bonkers!

Created in collaboration with Vincent Ordonenz
PRESS HERE TO SEE IT WITH YOUR OWN EYES!
Dear friends of the world, in the face of the current state of our world we feel the need to break the silence and take action for our planet. Waiting for authorities to take act upon these urgent matters is a waste of time and we need to unite in the face of this crises in order to imagine a better future. Protecting our environment and ourselves is of most importance and must be done now before it’s too late. As part of this wondrous nature we must have more empathy and collaborate. We invite you to join our Empathic Action towards our one and only Home- Planet Earth, by adding in your Art and Heart. Please email us to if you'd like to be part of our project and add your work to it.
