Entering the Ordinary Time

During the Ordinary Time, the Church celebrates the fullness of the mystery of the Lord Jesus. The people of God offer praise by celebrating the Paschal Mystery of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus. Sunday is the original Christian Feast Day, following the tradition handed down from Apostolic times, for this way the day of the Lord’s Resurrection.

Today’s Christian communities continue this tradition by celebrating every Sunday as the day of the risen Lord. (Source: ORDO)

Here are some resources that might help the faithful in learning more about this liturgical season, as well as practical advices to get the most out of the Ordinary Time.

Sunday of the Word of God | Jan 22

Pope Francis has declared that the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the word of God “that the life of our people be constantly marked by this decisive relationship with the living word that the Lord never tires of speaking to his Bride” (Aperuit Illis, 2). In 2022 the Sunday of the Word of God falls on this Sunday, Jan 22.

Liturgical suggestions and resources to celebrated Sunday of the Word of God are available here.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity | Jan 18-25

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated around the world on January 18-25. The 2023 theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, “Do good,; seek justice." (Isaiah 1:17).

The Week of Prayer is a time set aside for Christians to recognize that the divisions between our churches cannot be separated from divisions within the wider human family. Praying together for Christian unity allows us to reflect on what unites us and to commit ourselves to confront oppression and division amongst humanity.
  • The importance of unity among Christians and the responsibility of the people of each parish to work for this unity should be emphasized throughout the week. All members of the parish should seek to have a deeper understanding of ecumenism. (Source: ORDO 2023)
  • Resources are now available at https://weekofprayer.ca, including an order of worship, hymn suggestions, 8 days of scripture reflections on the theme, and materials for children and youth.

Pope's Prayer Intention - January 2023

  • Prayer Intention: Let us pray that educators may be credible witnesses, teaching fraternity rather than confrontation and helping especially the youngest and most vulnerable above all.

To inaugurate 2023, Pope Francis has chosen to send a message to educators with a unique proposal: “add new content to their teaching: fraternity." For the Pope, educators are witnesses of fraternity who not only pass on “their mental knowledge, but also their convictions, their commitment to life.”

Other resources & events

  1. Sunday Bulletin shorts, free to use
    • The central thread in John’s understanding of Jesus is that Jesus is the revelation of God’s own divine self. Jesus’ mission is to reveal the Father. This mission is passed on to each generation of followers. By taking within ourselves the revealed Word-made-flesh in Jesus, we become participants in the divine plan of being “a light to the nations.” The suffering servant in Isaiah is fulfilled in Jesus and continued in every Christian. John’s line “here is the Lamb of God …” is likely included because these words had already established themselves as an integral part of worship in the early church.
      • How do we live out our responsibility in the mission of Jesus?
      • How and where do we come to recognize Jesus?
      • Which part of John’s testimony impacts you most strongly?
