Happy new year all!

It’s always an exciting time to take stock and reevaluate and look forward to the coming year. We are seeing hopeful precipitation, starting the season with above average snowpack that we so desperately need (see map below). And we are grateful for everyone who was able to donate during the Week of Giving last year, and all those who responded to our letter in the mail - THANK YOU for keeping our funding flowing so we can continue the work to keep the things we love about this place alive for generations to come.

Lots going on to start this year:

Please get in comments on the Thompson Divide by Friday the 13th of January! (Ominous perhaps, but more ominous management actions might take place if our voices aren’t heard!)

Join us next week on Friday Jan 20 for MountainFilm on Tour at the Paradise Theatre. Tickets are going fast! Use the link below to purchase your tickets in advance and ensure you have a seat.

Make some time to improve habitat corridors by helping remove obsolete wildlife fencing in Cedaredge on Feb 3rd. See below.

And save the date for our Annual Meeting on Sunday March 12th - you might want to set aside that whole weekend (Saturday and Sunday) for beaver education opportunities! We’re just finalizing the details and will have more to share soon. We think you will agree this year’s Annual Meeting will be a not-to-miss event!

With deep appreciation,

Tanya Henderson

Thompson Divide Mineral Withdrawal

In October, the Biden-Harris administration began the process for an administrative withdrawal for the Thompson Divide, which would close the area to oil and gas leasing and mining for 20 years – a huge step forward!

The Thompson Divide is a spectacular landscape of a quarter of a million acres of public land in western Colorado. Filled with awe-inspiring natural beauty and abundant wildlife, our community has been fighting for its protection for over a decade. The Divide embodies the rural and wild character of western Colorado. It encompasses more than a dozen inventoried roadless areas – one of the densest concentrations in the region – but is threatened with potential oil and gas development and a lack of permanent protection.

This recent announcement by the Biden administration initiated a new public comment period on the subject. Tell the BLM and the USFS: “Unified for Thompson Divide” is a rallying cry that has brought a diverse and bipartisan coalition together, captivating imaginations nationwide. Our community supports the proposed withdrawal. Please move quickly and make this a priority. Deadline is January 13th! Click here to submit your comments.
