Save the Date! Gardner Market 2/27/23
|
|
|
The proposals came in, and we have a wonderful variety of items coming to the 2023 Gardner Market on Monday, February 27th! Our students have shared their ideas and are busily creating and planning. We encourage families to use materials from the Gardner Market planning packet to help students track the cost of materials, talk about pricing and profit, and help support the students in creating a timeline for working on their items. Our kindergarten and 1st grade students are working as a group to create and sell items, and teachers have reached out in their weekly newsletters with more specifics, too.
At Gardner, we love opportunities for students to take ownership of projects like this, and we appreciate that our parent community supports their hard work, too. Everyone is welcome, so invite your friends, neighbors, and family. Can't wait to see you at the market!

Would you like to share your traditions with our students?
In the coming weeks, we know several of our families will be celebrating Lunar New Year and Holi, and we welcome parents and grandparents to consider how they would like to share their family traditions with our students! In the past, we've had volunteers present stories, share special items, and welcome questions from our students. This is a special chance to highlight the variety of experiences our students and families have, and a wonderful learning opportunity.
If you are interested in connecting with classrooms (your child's and/or others), we'd love to invite you to campus! Reach out to Assistant Head of School, Courtney Tomlinson, to schedule a chat to learn more.

Financial Aid Application Reminder
Each year, the Gardner School commits roughly $300,000 for financial aid for our families. We know aid helps families provide this valuable educational gift to their children, and we welcome applications for our tuition assistance program. This aid is available for students in kindergarten through 6th grade. You can learn more online here, or by reaching out to Director of Business Operations, Sheila FitzPatrick, for more information.

Meet the Class Pet
Mario and Luigi, Blue Death Feigning Beetles
|
|
The Wy'East class welcomed two new additions to the 3rd/4th grade classroom- Mario and Luigi!
These blue death feigning beetles (absolus verrucosus) have some interesting adaptations that our class will be learning about as their thematic studies on habitats an ecosystems evolve. They are native to the deserts in the Southwest United States, they don't bite, they have a wide diet, and they can live up to 8 years in captivity. Our students are gentle, caring, and responsible stewards of these little beetles, and we're happy to welcome them to campus!
Want to learn more about them? Hear all about them in this video from the team at The Cincinnati Zoo.

Learning in Action
Reading Connections Between Classes
|
|
Our 5th and 6th graders have started visiting the 2nd grade classroom to support reading time. Younger and older children reading together promotes schoolwide connections, but it also provides an authentic audience for our students, encourages empathy, courage, patience, and kindness.

Campus snapshots
Opportunities for connection have occured all over campus lately, and it's one of the unique opportunities students have at Gardner. Whether it's connecting with classmates, older or younger students, or the wildife we share this space with, we value it!

Keeping all of our students in school depends on our families following the requests below for screening for symptoms.
1. In the last 72 hours, has your child had one or more of the following symptoms: fever > 100.4 F, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chills, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea and/or vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of smell/taste?
2. Has your child been in close contact with anyone with confirmed COVID-19 or has a public health or medical professional told your child to self isolate or self-quarantine because of concerns about COVID-19 infection?
3. If any of the answers to these questions are yes, have you emailed health@gardnerschool.org and been cleared to be on campus? If not, please remain off campus until cleared.
