In 2008 I was laid off from a job.

I spent the prior 12 months working on virtual events for technology companies (e.g., HP, Oracle and others).

I decided to share what I learned from the past year.

I launched a personal blog called “It’s All Virtual” and in my first post, claimed that virtual events would experience massive growth.

They did, but my timing was off 😜

Quickly I discovered the power of writing. I met people online who were reading my blog.

A fellow virtual events practitioner contacted me and we scheduled a phone call over the holidays.

He needed help with his virtual events strategy and started asking me questions about my latest blog post.

That was an a-ha moment 💡

People are reading what I’m writing. My writing is making a difference.

Getting questions about something I wrote was rewarding.

It inspired me to write more often and more deeply on the topic.

Here’s why writing is so powerful.

Helps organize your thoughts

Writing forces you to organize your thoughts and communicate them in a way that’s understandable.

If your thoughts on a topic are scattered or unfocused, writing about it can fix that.

It’s similar to teaching -- in fact, part of the role of writing is to be a teacher.

Teachers need to get their lesson plans in order before they stand in front of their classrooms.

Helps you realize your expertise

We’re all experts in something.

By focusing on a topic (i.e., rather than writing about anything and everything), you lay brick by brick for your house of expertise.

As the walls of your house get taller, so does your stature.

I was one of the leading experts in virtual events in 2009 🤓

I parlayed my blog posts into a book, “Generate Sales Leads With Virtual Events.”

Search for it on Amazon and you should be able to find it.

Around the Corner

Helps you advance your career or business interests

By writing consistently about a topic, you become known for your expertise.

People say, "Oh, she's the expert on [X]."

Business opportunities will come calling:

  • Writing a guest article
  • Being interviewed on a podcast
  • Collaborating with others on a book
  • Speaking at a conference
  • Being recruited for a new job

Writing is a way of marketing yourself, without actually marketing yourself.

When someone searches your name on Google, the search results can be more impactful than your resume.

If you’re looking for a job these days, I wish you the best.

In parallel to your search, consider getting published on relevant websites.

Once published on one notable site, pitch your writing to other sites.

Keep the cycle going.

You could also launch a blog or start publishing on LinkedIn.

You could launch a personal newsletter!

Beyond writing

It doesn’t have to be just writing.

The idea is to organize and share your perspectives with the world.

That could be videos, a podcast, a social media presence or more.

Your personal brand will be enhanced and magnified.

The start of the year is a great time to put the wheels in motion.

Let me know if you want to chat about this, as I'd love to help or provide ideas!

-Dennis.

Looking For A New Role in Marketing? Join Us!

This is a Zoom meeting to bring together marketers who are looking for new full-time roles or new business.

We'll have a managed discussion in which each participant is invited to provide an introduction, then tell us the types of marketing roles they're interested in landing.

We may also have some hiring managers present who are looking to hire marketing positions. They'll share details about their companies and the roles they're hiring.

The idea is for us to hear what folks are interested in, then see if we can help connect them to the right people or organizations.

Date:
January 17, 2023, 12pm to 1pm PT
