Days for Girls: Help Keep Girls in Schools in Developing Countries
1st Wednesday every month: 2/1, 12:30-3pm
Community Room, Eastside YMCA
Across the developing world, not having access to feminine hygiene products means that girls miss school, fall behind, and are increased danger of dropping out. Days for Girls is an international organization that hand sews bags with reusable, washable, cloth pads so that girls can go to school while they have their periods. Click here to learn why keeping girls in school is the 3rd most impactful global climate solution.

There is a local contingent of people who meet every month - on the first Wednesday of every month at the Penfield Y to create these bags - and they have distributed hundreds just in the last few months, thousands over the years. While they love having experienced sewers join, everyone is welcome. They need folks to measure, cut, and thread ribbon as well. No RSVP necessary. Just show up! *NOTE: You must be a Y member to participate. No guests allowed yet.

Governor Hochul's Climate and Environmental Goals and Achievements

Governor Hochul addressd the state leaders and all New Yorkers in her State of the State speech on Jan 10th. You can read her full statement here

Gov. Hochul shared some of her proposals to address the climate crisis:

  • End the sale of any new fossil fuel-powered heating equipment by 2030
  • All new construction will be zero emission starting in 2025 for smaller buildings and 2028 for large buildings
  • NY will pursue a Cap-and-Invest program: "Big greenhouse gas emitters will have to purchase permits to sell polluting fuels. The dirtier the fuel, the bigger the price tag. The "invest" part of the program will accelerate the clean energy transition and include a universal Climate Action rebate that will provide $1 Billion in revenues that we'll allocate to help cover utility bills, transportation costs, and de-carbonization efforts."

And speaking of Gov. Hochul, here are some of the environmental bills she signed into law in the final days of 2022:

Earth Day Every Day
Green Tips

Curated by Susan and John Steepy
Members of Color Penfield Green

Happy New Year!

We are finally moving into winter weather and it's a great time to seal up a drafty house. Environment America offers some extensive tips for weatherizing your home. It even includes instructions and information about financing through the famous Inflation Reduction Act, which is intended to help all of us make green improvements to our homes, AND instructions with the application! So take a look to see what you need to do to tighten up your home, or if you have already done so, see if you missed anything.

Plastic likely takes some form in most of the things we buy every day. It has been well documented that plastics pose one of the most serious threats to our Earth's environment. Arguably the greatest single threat is single-use plastic, that is, plastic we use once and throw away: plastic wrap, plastic cups, packaging, etc.

Click on this link to find out how we consumers can do our part to keep single-use plastics out of our environment. And click on Good, Better, Best — Eliminating Plastic Waste to learn even more.

And as you welcome 2023 please remember,
REDUCE – REUSE – REPURPOSE - RECYCLE

The Cost of Inaction

Think investing in climate is expensive? Not doing so will cost us far more!

The US endured 18 separate disasters in 2022 whose damages exceeded $1 billion, with the total coming to $165 billion, according to a new report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).The annual report from the nation's premier meteorological institution highlights a troubling trend: Extreme weather events, fueled by human-caused climate change, are occurring at a higher frequency with an increased cost — in dollars and lives.

Go All Electric - Sounds Great! How?

With an estimated 40% of the United States carbon emissions coming from our homes and the vehicles we drive, switching to all electric will reduce emissions. Rewiring America, an electrification non-profit, recently released a guide to going all electric and making the most of the Inflation Reduction Act.

For questions about home electrification, contact Heat Smart Finger Lakes and request a 15 or 30 minute conversation with an unbiased expert in the field who can answer your questions about available incentives (state and federal) and various technologies. Schedule anytime at this link.

Nationally, all this electrification without major grid upgrades through permitting reform means that we'll have to burn coal in the coming years, reducing the climate benefits. The Bipartisan Policy Center has these 23 recommendations and Solar advocates have these 20. And tune in 1/19 at noon to hear Amped discuss local grid issues. See upcoming events below.

The Green Energy Transition

This is a new section of our newsletter dedicated to sharing developments in sustainability and adaptation from around the world.
On Jan 3rd, CalTech launched a small craft into orbit to test the efficacy of space-based solar power. The prototype project, Space Solar Power Demonstrator (SSPD) will now run tests to show its ability to beam usable energy from orbit which is practically unlimited because it is unaffected by the cycles of day and night or by cloud cover and shading from objects.
Thousands of Canadian residents awoke Christmas day with no electricity after a massive winter storm swept across the area. One southern Ontario resident was able to keep the lights on for almost two days after plugging in his Ford F-150 Lightning, and still had plenty of battery left after the power came back on.
Europe added 41.4 GW of new solar capacity in 2022, according to SolarPower Europe’s (SPE) new EU Market Outlook for Solar Power 2022-2026 report. Annual additions grew by almost 50%, up from 28.1 GW in 2021. It's another record-breaking year for solar, with the continent adding 10 GW more capacity than predicted by SPE in 2021.

Take the Climate Action Pledge

It is critical that we have a 40% reduction in emissions by 2030 here in NY.  The Climate Solutions Accelerator has developed a strategic climate action plan - a roadmap - for our 9 county region to meet that goal.
The Accelerator is asking all of us to sign their pledge, committing to being a part of the solution: reducing our personal carbon footprint, educating ourselves on the issue, and pushing for policies at the community and state level that will result in an inclusive green energy transition.
