Catalogs Now Available for Pickup
&
Registration Opens January 16
Jan. 16 - 23: Submit registration requests (either online or to OLLI staff)
Jan. 24-25: Lotteries run; registration paused
Jan 26: Email notification of results and waitlists sent out
Jan. 26+: Immediate enrollment available for all unfilled seats
Send us your registration forms if you would like us to do it for you! Mail has gotten very slow so you may want to bring your registration form directly to the OLLI office. If you drop your form off when we aren't here, it's fine to slide it under the door (room 159, UAF University Park Building, 1000 University Ave.)
Additionally, the OLLI office will be closed that day, but we will be back to address any issues, questions, or concerns on Tuesday, Jan. 17. You will have roughly the whole week until the 23rd to put in any course requests you may have.
Remember that you can also adjust the priority of your requests by logging into your account and clicking "Account", then finding the link that says "My Course Priorities."
Questions? OLLI staff is here to help!

Parking
A UAF permit is required to park anywhere in the lots around the UPark building, including the handicap spaces. You can purchase a permit for $12 at the OLLI office, good for the entire spring term. You'll need to bring your license plate number and vehicle description. You can also purchase an OLLI parking permit online here.
OLLI does not have the power to give or forgive parking citations, and we are not told when Parking Services will be patrolling the lots.

Support OLLI for UA Giving Days
Feb. 22 & 23, 2023
UAF's Giving Day is coming soon! OLLI's Advisory Board and Program Director challenge you give a financial gift to support OLLI. We're planning to match gifts up to a total of $4,000.
Be aware that any gifts made before Feb. 21 may not be counted towards Giving Day, so if you were planning on making a donation soon, you may want to wait a little bit!
We'll add instructions on how to give in the newsletter for February, so keep an eye out.

Donations Fill In The Gaps
Remember that YOU are what makes OLLI possible, and we're incredibly thankful that you choose to spend your time and money on a program that you value. Your volunteer efforts and donations make us able to keep our membership and tuition prices low and affordable, and allow us to offer reduced-price financial hardship membership to those who need it.
Our fundraising goal for fiscal year 2023 (July 2022 - June 2023) is $37,000 (spendable). We're currently sitting at $23,500 now. THANK YOU!

February 3, 2023: "Pollinators and Other Insects in Alaska's Gardens"
by Derek Sikes
Learn about the diverse many-legged animals that often visit gardens in Alaska, both the beneficial pollinators and predators. This talk will include a brief overview of the ecological importance of insects and recent studies showing insect population declines as well as threats to pollinators and what people can do to help them.
As Curator of Insects for the University of Alaska Museum and Professor of Entomology in the Department of Biology and Wildlife at University of Alaska Fairbanks, Derek Sikes has been working since 2006 to improve the Alaska state insect collection, teach entomology to UAF students and the public, and expand knowledge of Alaska's most numerous animals. Derek specializes in molecular and morphological based phylogenetics, taxonomy, and faunistics of nonmarine Alaskan arthropods, principally Coleoptera (beetles).
