Mission Responsible #18

Welcome to 2023 and a new issue of Mission: Responsible.

To kick off this year, we’re sharing some of last year’s highlights from the Responsible Data mailing list! The list below is a collection of key resources and discussion points that came up in 2022 – though of course there are plenty more that we couldn’t include in this short email. If you’re interested in keeping up with these conversations as they happen, you’re welcome to join the community.

An overview of 2022: 12 memorable moments for the RD community

  1. Publishing the Responsible Data Community Retrospective: a collection of 12 articles about the current state of Responsible Data work.

  2. Collectively reflecting on potential consequences of the regrettable cyberattack suffered by the ICRC and being inspired by how ICRC staff, including field staff, were transparently handling this situation.

  3. MERL Tech’s new guides on Responsible Data Governance for Monitoring and Evaluation in Africa and the updated  Responsible Data Public Resource List.

  4. This NCHS paper on data sharing between humanitarian actors and donor governments, with a focus on governing frameworks and how these are implemented, and avenues for more responsible data sharing.

  5. Mercy Corps’ series of Data Protection and Privacy Guides, designed to support staff and partners understand and implement responsible data practices.

  6. The publication of IFRC’s Data Playbook, a comprehensive resource offering practical ways for teams to integrate data literacy skill-building into their day-to-day work.

  7. This article with essential considerations for conducting ethical war crimes documentation, written by Jennifer Easterday, Jacqueline Geis, and Alexa Koenig after an inspiring exchange on the RD mailing list.

  8. CartONG’s responsible data management toolbox, which provides an accessible overview of the concepts of Responsible Data and Data Protection in the nonprofit sector.

  9. This conversation about how data portability is more than a technical question, ignited by the Collaborative Cash Delivery Network’s ECHO project

  10. Interviewing Belkis Wille, Georgia Bullen and Anja Kovacs.

  11. The Ada Lovelace Institute’s report “Rethinking data and rebalancing digital power”, exploring how a more ambitious vision for data use and regulation could deliver a positive shift in the digital ecosystem towards people and society.

  12. This conversation about how civil society is navigating the recent changes Twitter has gone through and practical examples of what organisations are doing to support and/or protect vulnerable communities on the platform.

That is it for today. If you’d like to learn more about the RD listserv and/or sign up, you can do that here. As always, feel free to get in touch with us at hello@responsibledata.io to talk about this newsletter or share your RD thoughts and questions!

Have a great 2023,
The Engine Room.
